Please post your Air Filter experience.
My mom has requested a little more umph for her '03 legacy 2.5 auto. Mainly, she wants just a little more umph for on-ramp to highway speeds. I figured a simple K&N filter would do exactly that, so here are my questions: Does this cause any problem with Idle or driveability? Is it worth the $45 to anyone that actually has it? How bad is the whistling sound associated with increasing flow? I did a search and found no definitive answers and the same topic in a hundred different places. I think it would be nice to centralize the topic to one thread, so please, if you have any direct experience with changing the air filter on your 2.5 legacy, please post your experience, pros/cons etc.
I noticed the silencer description is totally different for the older and newer legacies, so please be specific and post pics if you've got them. Thanks in advance.

I've put a K&N filter in the last 4 Scoobies I've owned. Two of those were Outbacks. You won't notice any difference at all in power really. At least not any oomph. They are cleanable though and that's a good thing. FWIW I switched form K&N to a Green Filter because I think it's made better.

thanks for the reply. good info, keep it coming. Wasn't expecting oomph, since it's still N/A, I barely noticed any difference on my non-turbo cars, but it gave my '89 t-bird noticeably smoother accelleration at on-ramps. not oomph, just more fluent, like it wasn't working as hard to make the same speed. That's kind of what I was hoping for the legacy. the rest of the car's i've owned were turbo until now, and switching air filters, obviously made very noticable power. (except my wrx, I just scalped the silencer)
speaking of which, Peaty, did you just change filters or is that with silencer modding too?
Please keep the posts coming, thanks.

First I removed the big black plastic box that hangs off the intake tube. I duct taped over the hole and the car feels a lot stronger in the mid range. A little noisy when you step on the gas. I also installed a Green air filter, I couldn't feel a change with it.
The box has one bolt and just pop's off of the intake duct. There is a small box that I'll remove next. Someday...

I have a K&N drop in with my own custom piping from the air box to the stock underhood cool air scoop, and it actually helped quite a bit. (Nothing super amazing but noticeable) My car is in the body shop right now, but I will post a pic when I get it back, Dont know when? maybe 3 weeks
oh well.late

The big difference that I see between the Green filters and the K&Ns is that the K&Ns are covered (near the "frame") in rubber and offer less surface area than the optimally constructed Green filter.

i have the k&n in my 2.2 turbo, and i didnt notice much of a power differnce, but i did notice it in the pocket book, as, 2 or 3 regular filters were the same price as a k&n, so it is saving my money now in the long run. i like the k&n and would prolly put it in my next car.
*on a side not, i did notice a difference when i put a k&n in my gf's metro, cuz when you only have 45hp, 2 or 3 more is a noticable jump

not exactly what your talking about but I have a cone air filter that works beutifully, I'm acutually unsure of brand, it came on my rallitek intake. Also, I'm planning on doing some plumbing to get some fresh air to my intake. I'd like to go to the front of the car to get a ram air effect but I'd settle for the fender. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to go about this.
