misses and stalls, almost tried it all ...

So, I have a 1993 Subaru Legacy. If I drive it for more than ten miles or so, or make small trips around town for several days, the engine begins to misfire and then stalls. If I keep trying to drive it, black smoke shoots out the tailpipe, and it smells like 4th of July. (Carbon deposits?) The strange thing is, if I don't drive it for a few days afterward, it behaves normally for a while when I drive it again. Typically only happens in gear; idles fine. It has been almost a year since this problem first surfaced.
Dealership had the car for five days and was unable to replicate the problem. Check engine light had been on, but they said they pulled no informative codes from the computer. (It stalled again on my way home.)
I have checked and replaced (for good measure and in sheer desperation) the fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil, and oxygen sensor, re-cleaning the spark plugs with each replacement. I don't believe it is overheating; temp guage remains within normal operating range.
Any ideas? I really love this car; aside from this (rather major) problem, it runs perfectly. I'd like to get it going reliably again.
Thanks for your time!

Have you checked the MAF?
I believe knock sensor failures are extremely common on the earlier model Legacies, so I'd check into that as well, just for good measure if anything. Subaru released a revised version of the part which goes for $30-$40 on subaruparts.com.

You're welcome, I hope it helps. If I were you, I'd check stored codes too, just incase. For a '93, you shouldn't need a scanner to check them.
By the way, have you checked bbs.legacycentral.org ? Lots of good Legacy info there.
