Might need to swap a EJ20 in a 97 GT, any tips?
Well, it looks like I have a cracked block in my car, and I'll know in the next couple days whether or not I'll be able to fix it or have to replace it. If it can't be fixed, I'm hesitant to put in another 2.5L, and am looking at my options...
From what I've found is that I could use a EJ20T out of a WRX or a JDM EJ20TT, and both should mate up to my existing 4EAT tranny. I know either will probably need the cross member from a JDM legacy, harness, ecu, and a hood to acomodate the TMIC.
As far as the wiring goes, how tricky is the harness to swap out in these cars? I know I've pulled some dashes that were no problem and then others that were a sheer nightmare, and am wondering where the Legacy GT ranks in terms of difficulty? Would I be better off trying to modify my existing harness? If I just swap the harness, how much trouble will I have getting my insturment cluster working correctly or is that even possible?
Other than the wiring and crossmember, what else would I need? If I go with the JDM EJ20TT, how much work is involved in moving the smaller turbo out of the way of the steering linkage?
Basically, if I do this, I want to maintain near-stock reliability and drivability, keep it emissions legal for the state of CT, and not turn it into a $10,000 project. I drive an ambulance for a living and need something AWD and dependable that can get me to work even when the rest of the state is shut down due to snow. (I finally gave up on the Talon TSi's in terms of reliability and am a rather new subi-convert
)
