Turbo Sound on a non-turbo Legacy

Hello I just bought a '95 legacy L fwd...Above 3500 rpm's I can here a distinct whistle sound coming from the engine. (almost like a whiney turbo) Anyone ever heard of this? is it some kind of EGR system? flywheel noise?
Its only on acceleration...not on rev...
It sounds pretty cool...

sure its coming from the engine, not the transmission?

That sounds like a case of transmission whine.

Or the fuel pump (which is actually behind you, but sounds like it is coming through the floor).

exaust manifold, i used to have an old geo prizm and i started to hear a whine every time i would step on the gas and after a while it started to get really bad then it just stoped. then i took it to a machanic and he told me that i had a cracked manifold i dont know how he knew that but i got a new one and when i took off the old one there was like a 5 inch crack all the way down. take off your heat shild from you manifold and check for cracks, look on the side closest to the engine too thats where mine was, you might need a little mirror and a flash light. sound just like my old problem though.

I don't know where the sound comes from, but I get a similar whine from my '98 outback. It happens at mid rpm (2-3k) under load - basically when accelerating through this rpm range at speed under heavy throttle. I kind of like it too, FWIW.

I know it isn't a Subaru, but when I mash the throttle in my 94 V8 Camaro I get a whine that sounds like a "supercharger whine." I'm pretty sure it's the cold air intake.....It has 170,000 miles on it and no ill effects, so.......

Maybe your Subaru just makes the same type of whine?

I think it's the intake as well (although the stock one in this case). A friend of mine had a crown vic that had this happen except intensely loud... it's not so much like a turbo whine though - more of a pure tone w/o the low-frequency "chirp" modulation that a turbo makes.

LOL... but what I'm talking about isn't that loud. Then again, cracking the manifold might be that loud. So I'll offer my services publicly: pay me $100 and I'll crack your manifold good

My 99 GT does the same. I'm sure it's air sneaking around the filter. I have a K&N and the noise became significantly more pronounced after that went in. I kinda like it!
