Fuel Level Sender

I just bought a 97 Legacy 2.5 GT today and I know I am going to have to replace the fuel level sending unit. I was wondering whether anyone had any information about where on the tank it is located so I know whether I should do it myself or bring it to my mechanic (I don't pick the car up until next Saturday so I'm just trying to plan ahead). I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but with the searches having to be 90 seconds apart, after 5 minutes I'd only managed 3 searches.

It should be built in to the pump unit, which is accessed from the top of the tank.

Do you mean to say that the entire pump assembly is going to need to be replaced, or is it an individually available piece? The fuel pumps are only $100 or so so it's not a nightmare, but if there's a simple variable resistor or something that could be replaced.

The sender and pump are all on a unit that is immersed in the fuel. I haven't looked into it, but I'm almost certain that the sender part should be replaceable by itself, as the pump is.

Thanks for the info. I'll pull it out when I pick the car up tomorrow and take a look at it and see.
