Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Question Fuel sender/gauge incompatibility

I'm on a roll today second Q for the day

The fuel sender unit in my '95 GX ej18 broke so i replaced it with a second hand one.

The problem is that I got a fuel sender from a two sender unit setup which runs them in series (2.5ohm to 45ohm each, therefore 90ohm total at empty) and my GX only uses a single sender setup therefore requiring a sweep from 5 to 90ohm for full to empty to show up correctly on the fuel gauge.

So now the fuel gauge shows the tank to be full as the sender is at 2.5ohm at full, stays there for ages and then only goes down to half tank on the fuel gauge when the tank/sender is at empty (45ohm).

Is anyone aware of any fixes for this?? Either at sender end or fuel gauge end so that the fuel gauge shows a correct fuel lever linearly from full to empty?? Some kind of linear volt doubler maybe?? Electronics stump me

Cheers Dan

Maybe this will make it easier to understand

The red shows the sweep of the gauge needle from full to empty

The problem is how do I make the fuel gauge sweep from full to empty using a 2.5-45ohm sender unit??

Just a quick update. I showed this problem to two electronic technicians and both scratched their heads. There's no easy way of correcting the fuel gauge reading while running a sigle fuel sender from a dual sender setup. The problem is that you can not double the voltage/resistenace linearly.

Anyway, it was time to put this one to bed so I replaced the sender for the proper single fuel sender (5-90ohm) and all is fine again. Anyway it's worth checking the resistence range on the sender when buying replacements.

its always better to put in the proper part rather than modify another part
