Question 99 GT 5 sp Trans dying in Detroit

Posted in a couple other threads. Basically, something is binding up in reverse when cold (has happened twice in four days). Whining something fierce in decel, though I can hardly tell if its trans axle or rear diff (they kinda sing in tune?). It slows to a pulsating / clicking at low speeds. Noise is speed dependent, not rpm. I'm thinking maybe yoke issue or U joint in driveshaft. Local dealer said I'm looking at $4000 for a reman. Subie trans and rear end installed, but I'm not a rich man. I'm a novice wrench with decent tools and a Haynes manual. If I rent a car or buy a beater, is this a job I could pull off in two or three weeks after work? Anyone know a reliable shop in D Town?

I did change rear a month ago and front twice in the past month. The front is still generating some nasty filings (either that or the first change didn't flush all the debris out).

Dead ctr. diff, but trans OK and for sale

A press fit steel ring seal in the front of the diff broke and thrashed my center diff. I'm replacing it with a used trans and diff (cheaper than new diff and diff case), but now I have a trans for sale - 170K. Needs rebuild of wear items - bearings, seals. Synchros OK. Have parts list from Subaru dealer where I got a second opinion. If this is worth anything to you, email me at trev10dan@hotmail.com.
