Boost Controller Dying/Dead?
Let me start out by saying what engine mods I have on my car:
Greddy Profec B boost controller
MRT Turbo-back exhaust
That's it.
So, this weekend at Buttonwillow, in 3rd and 4th gears, my boost began to go WAY over what I had it set at. It was set at about 16psi, but was boosting between 20-25 psi!
After turning off the EBC, it was still doing it.
My question is, does this sound like a solenoid dying? The weird thing is that other people at the track were saying that their cars seemed to be putting out more power than usual (ie...maybe something was affecting the EBC that was beyond my control.)
I started home last night and right after getting on the freeway it was doing the same thing with the EBC on and off. When I got about an hour from my home, the EBC would boost to 17-18 psi and when off would boost to about 15psi.
I was running 100 octane fuel on the track.
I did mix it with a different brand 91 octane too, though I don't think it would matter that much.
I don't know what is going on, but I was hoping someone here would have some insight into this.
Thanks,
Josh

My two cents... er guesses...
- your EBC is set for warmer ambient temps and some cold air took you buy surprise. This is the only thing I can think of beyond alien or divine intervention that could make a whole track boost better
or
- your wastegate or actuator is going bad or you have a leak or block towards the actuator and the wastegate won't open.
It could be the EBC solenoid dying, but I've never heard of that happening. I have heard of wastegate going bad. Check the boost lines.

After doing some more research I've found that the solenoid dying is actually a common problem with the crappy Profec-B.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised. After having to fight like hell to get the Greddy people to support their product, it's now apparent that it's Greddy thing...which is why I vowed never to purchase a product from them again.
Thanks,
Josh

Well this is the very first time in my whole life I've been wrong!
Hehehe... I would never have guessed. But I know what you mean, I've never been keen on Greddy products.
Well, I'm glad you figured it out. I'd much rather change that out than a wastegate.
I also recommend the Blitz DSBC Spec-R if you're looking for a replacement. Same solenoid as the SBC iD, and a similar computer without a lot of the frills but also without a lot of the price.
