Soft cotton towels, washed a few times. If you wanna go gungho, cloth diapers... no kidding. I used a high quality synthetic chamois, and I make sure it is always damp before I use it.
If you have swirls, just a nice, light clear coat polish or cleaner wax to take them out. You can also fill them in with a resin coat.

220 grit sandpaper is okay too,
what ever you do, DO NOT WASH WITH THE BRUSH AT THE DO IT YOURSELF WASHES. will scrath your clear coat.
i found that if you wax with scrathx from meguiers it gets alot of the swirlies out.
if you go to the do it yourselffers, just use the sprayer.

maybe wet 2000 grit, followed by some rubbing compound-
but 220 will tear through everything instantly- 220 is used for stripping paint, not polishing!!!!

SOME ACTUALLY USEFUL ADVISE ON THE TOPIC:
The way to prevent getting them in the first place is to use a back and forth motion rather than round and round- try to move in the direction that wind flows over your vehicle, this keeps what little ultrafine sctratches there are pointed in one direction so they don't catch the light as much, and aren't as apparent.
Other good suggestions above- dry with a very clean 100% cotton towel, or microfiber, or chamois.
and don't use the brush at the car wash, they are usually full of gravel.

always make sure that the car is completely rinsed with water before rubbing and applying the soap/wash itself...leftover dirt can create a lot of swirlies and scratches as well...
and yeah, don't let teh car sit for a long time...wipe if off right away, i usually use Chamois cloth which i rinse beforehand to make sure there are no dirt or any substance that can create scratches
oh yeah, make sure you rinse your sponge and wash bucket very well

never blast your car with water when still dirty that will leave swirls. most waxes will only cover up swirls temporarily, you can use 3M fine grit swirl remover to get the swirls out if you do get some.
