When replacing the stock scoop with the STi, are there things that need to be added, like a grill? Are they needed to prevent intercooler damage? Whats a splitter by the way?

nope. nothing else needed. if you get the splitter (internal vent)
you will get the full benefit of the hoodscoop. but depending
on your wrx, you may need the actual STI intercooler to use
the STI splitter completely (otherwise you're left with a big hole
on the right side of the intercooler).

I was planning to get the STI intercooler so bought the
replica splitter, but decided to work on my stereo after
getting a speeding ticket.

the US factory splitter works fine on mine.

i bought mine from gruppe-s.com i think MPJ Performance
and subydude.com has them pre-painted for like $175 or so.
