Stereo Puzzler
I had a weird thing happen with the stereo recently. When I started up my WRX to drive home, the stereo wouldn't turn on. I pushed the power button a couple of times, just in case it was a simple loose connection. Nothing.
I stopped, turned the engine off, then back on again, still no stereo power.
Then, in the grand tradition of "If all else fails jiggle the wires" I started pushing every flipping button on the stereo. Nothing happend until I pushed the CD eject button. Then the stereo came on, ejected the CD, and has worked fine since then.
Maybe the car was just mad at me for parking it outside in the cold, I don't know.

Some times when the ignition is shut off without physically pressing the power or eject button during play, the error code is seen by some CD players. Although not as common with todays technology, malfunctions still do occur , more so with high/low temperatures(you said it was really cold).By pressing the eject button you cleared the code by removing the CD. When decks are powered up for the first time during installation, the noise heard during plug-in is the eject mechanism functioning. Try making a habit of lowering the volume, ejecting, or pause/stopping the CD before shutting off the ignition. Your stereo will love you for the effort.

No kidding?

That, in all honesty, is fascinating. I usually do adjust the volume before I shut the ignition off, so that if I have a passenger when I start up again they aren't blasted by the radio, but not that time.
And to think I was ready to dismiss it as a consumer electronics anamoly - one of those things that makes you say "Hmmmmm"
