They mainly allow you to adjust such things as boost, air/fuel-ratio, etc. from your driver's seat in real time while showing you real time numbers of what exactly is going on in your engine (oil temp, voltage, boost, etc.). They're more convenient than reflashes and things like the UTEC, but they're not for the inexperienced as improper settings can literally destroy your car (detonation anyone?
). This is because most parameters are manually set by you the driver; failure to keep performance within reason can easily result in disaster (newer model "magic boxes" have many safety catches though...)

the funny thing is i don't even know how to use those things(yet) i just know what they do- and my friends use them for their cars. huge difference. unless you have an extra 5k for a motor i suggest "sitting in" with someone thats already running it.
