Alpine speakers are always a good bet, they never skimp on quality. Me? I use DLS speakers and amps, hard to find, and a very mellow sound.

i currently like infinity speakers....ive got a pair of 6.5" that are way too big and so i sold those and got a set of the 5 1\4 size for the rear....theyre very nice speakers and at a good price when you buy them on ebay!
Polk Momo 6.5 up front and Polk DB series 5.1/4 in the rear of my wagon. I've got a sub and an amp in the back and pretty soon i'll be powering my door speakers with an ol skool 4 channel alpine v12.
I've known people to be very happy with the infiniti kappa series also. (appearantly the new ones don't fit anymore without spacers cuz they go too deep)

shameless plug: I have a set of Kenwood Excelon 6.5" components for sale, they aren't top of the line, but they're solid speakers.

brand really doesnt matter as long as you dont cheap out and get POSs...it really just depends on how they sound, go to circuit city or best buy and toy around; just see what the best deal you can get for however much youre trying to spend is. infinitys def sound great (possibly the best?) but can be costly. see what kind of deal you can get. i got some nice kickers cheap as hell; sound great.
I disagree that brand doesn't matter, as a brand's design philosophy can influence the sound of their gear.
Speakers are the most important component of your sound system and, like it or not, there are definite differences from brand to brand and between series within the same brand. Driver materials, basket construction, surround design, etc. will all differ and can all make an audible difference. This is true for tweeters, mids, woofers and subs. There may be no "best" speaker in a price range, but there will certainly be a best speaker for you.
For example, Infinity speakers tend to have "bright" tweeters, which is great if you want a detailed high end, but not so great if you find yourself wincing at high pitched sounds.
MB Quarts have warmer tweeters, which make vocals sound great but don't provide the transparency you hear in higher end Infinitys.
It is good advice to go and listen to see what you like, but Circuit City and Best Buy (particularly Best Buy) will rarely get you a good deal on good gear. Find a dealer in your town and negotiate.
