How to find a rattle in my center console?
I've got a vibration rattle from inside my center dash (sounds like it might be behind the vents) at around 2500-4000 RPM in 1st or 2nd gear (under 15 MPH).
Are there any good tricks to finding these things without taking stuff apart?

Nope.
I've torn my WRX apart for all sorts of rattles and buzzes, particularly in the front dash area. Never had such a rattle-prone vehicle before. Rattles drive me NUTS. I still have a couple left to chase down, including dualing rattles in both B pillar areas.
Bang on the area, hear the rattle, take the console apart bit by bit until you find the thing and kill it with all due speed. [grin]
Good luck!

I had this recently. I finally gave up and asked the service dept. to lok at it while I was there for something else. They said it was the "grill" (their term) where the defrost blows out onto the windshield. Said it was loose due to a broken part or something. Still waiting for the replacement, but now that I have heard that I think they may be right. What the hell, the guy said it was covered by warrenty. Never would have figured taht on a 2000, but I'm not gonna argue. I was afraid it was something wrong with the fan.

Ah, now THIS one I can help you with.
Yes, the clock rattles. Yes, the cover for the passenger airbag rattles. But, oh, OH(!), that bloody plastic piece below the window... it rattles and buzzes like nothing else on this green earth.
Take the clock assembly off the dash. Use hot-melt glue on the clock portion and secure it to the bezel. Take low-density open-cell foam weatherstrip and apply it to every contact point on the assembly and put it back onto the dash. Do the same thing for the freakin' airbag cover.
Now, take out that blasted plastic bezel that goes across the entire dash below the windshield. Be very, very careful when taking it out, because you'll dig the fasteners into the soft dash when you pull it out- and you'll scratch the dash.
Take your foam weatherstrip and apply, apply, apply. Put it EVERYWHERE. Put it along the entire edge of that piece, every contact point, even where you don't think you need it. Cut foam and jam it into the various spots under that part, and snap it back into place.
Nirvana.
Now if I could just fix my oscillating/grabby/inconsistent/annoying clutch this easily. Back to the dealer for the third fix- and only 10,000 miles on this go-around.
I drive a lot- have 36,000 miles on this beast already, and it's only 18 month old. Anyone else having trouble with the clutch?
