Headlights

Hi I'm new to the Subaaru scene and I was looking for aftermarket headlights. I know most of the stuff on Ebay is mostly cheaply made or they give poor light output. How hard is it to find the JDM black housing headlights for the bugeye?

How about doing a koji mod? Picture is not that great, but look at the headlight..what do you think? In a nutshell, take out your headlights..pop it in an oven..pry it open carefully..spray paint the bezels flat black..wait..then reinstall. Hope this helps..enjoy.

If you are concerned with light output you should note that the JDM lights have a right-hand-drive beam pattern and aren't properly suited for use in the US. They are "E-code" lights so the beam pattern rises up to the left which means they will blind oncoming traffic. You can't adjust this out, although it is possible to open them up and modify the beam so it no longer does that. However even after doing so the light output won't be optimum.
You can get EDM lights which are basically the same but have the correct LHD beam pattern, unfortunately these are less readily available and more expensive.
Both the JDM and EDM lights use H1 bulbs for the low beam. H1's are not as efficient a light source as H7's, and there are other lights that use H7 bulbs. These include Morettes, UK-300's and Prodrives. Again unfortunately, all of these are long out of production so you can't buy them new. They do turn up used sometimes, Morettes are the most commonly seen. Keep an eye on the classifieds.
And yes the cheap lights you see on Ebay are total garbage and should be avoided.

you could also do a retro fit on your oem lights cheaper than buying jdm projects and lhd beam pattern still.

Morette's are still available. I have ordered and recieved mine for my MY02 WRX Wagon. I am currently getting them painted and have an installation appointment set for next week. I ordered them from a place in the UK and it took 3 weeks to get them.

i find the jdm/edm ones too expensive for me to purchase.
if you dont want to spend a grand or so, just paint them or do the koji mod.
but to answer your question, theyre readily available. a lot of ppl are selling their used sets also, you just have to search around.

Better make sure those Morettes aren't RHD if you got them from the UK.

Well that's interesting, last I heard they were out of production due to DOT compliance issues. Do you know if the ones you are getting are the same as the earlier ones, or a new redesigned version?

I don't know whether or not they are earlier design or new version. I ordered them from "Auto Tint Design" UK, phone number 011.44.113.289.1500. Part no. SACC2574. They are all black and I am keeping the black through the center and painting the top and bottom cresents silver like my WRX.

BTW ; they are a continental & USA left hand drive version. DOT compliance issues are not a problem "over the pond".

make sure to protect that lense with somthing. u will be very upset if they get a crack from a rock or other road debris. would still get the jdm ones and do a tsx or s2k retro instead. just my .02

remember, rockblocker!
