Bigger is better 
The lower the gauge # of the wire the larger it is and the more current it can carry. It's always better to use a larger gauge wire than necessary and there is no downside unless the wire is physically too cumbersome for the application.
18 gauge wire is more than sufficient for connecting gauges as they do not draw very much current.
