Cost of a replacement grille, 98 Outback?
One possibility for my One Day I'll Get Off My Butt and Install Driving Lights project is to mount the lights in the grille. To do that, I'm considering getting an extra grille from a salvage yard. What do people charge for that part?

Check, saw that, nice install. But your license plate is completely stoned...
I already have the lights, they've been on my Escort for years and still work perfectly.
As seen here...
Like driving a giant flashlight. Well, that Escort is almost ready to rust in half (part of the rear floor is a sign from a golf course) and I want to pull those lights for my OB before I get rid of that car.
(Or, wreck it in such a way as to save the lights - "Not in the face! Not in the face!")
I need a solid way to mount them. The Escort has more bumper, and I was easily able to drill holes and mount the lights, nothing complicated. With the OB, I need to consider the possibility of snagging the lights while nosing through brush, so that's one reason why I'm considering a recessed install that keeps them back out of harm's way.
So, I'm thinking of getting a second grille. I think they're interchangeable among Legacy models for 1995 - 99, right?

If those are Hella 550 series, they'll fit below the bumper, in the air intake area.
The downside is that you'll have to cut the bumper skin a tad.

Those are PIAAs - I want to say they're the 100 model, but I can't verify. They are almost exactly like Cibie 95s, if you know those.
One issue about a lower mounting point as you suggest - the driving lights won't reach as far, and when cresting hills, there is a moment when the headlights are shining over the crest, but the driving lights haven't "come up over the horizon" yet. OTOH they also tend to show every little ripple in the pavement surface, making it easier to read.
Ideally, I'd like to have their filaments be at the same height as the headlights.
I have also learned not to mount them too far inboard, or else people will misjudge your distance and think you're farther away than you are. Had a semi pull in front of me that way one time, it was good for a thrill. But with a 98 OB front end, there isn't much choice, unless I want to block the stock headlights. Note on that Escort, they are as far outboard as I could get them before they started to obscure the (crappy) stock lights.
