centre console removal '97 Legacy
I'm looking to replace the radio with a CD player/changer. What's the procedure for removing the trim peices from the centre console so I can get at the unit?
It looks pretty accessible so there's little point in paying a radio shop the same price as the CD player to install if I can do it myself.
Thanks,

you can find step by step instructions for stereo install on www.scoobymods.com
I imagine your interior is pretty similar to my impreza wagon. On mine, you lift the cover off the arm rest and remove the two phillips head screws. this allows you to pull the plastic cover for your e-brake back. Don't remove it completely, just back a few inches.
then you can pull the plastic trim around the audio console off (starting at the bottom). it is just clipped in.
That exposes the screws holding the stereo mounting bracket in place.

Mine's not quite the same ('97 Legacy):
pop open the cup holder and there's 2 screws, pull out the little bin beside the cig. lighter and there's 2 more facing upwards.
Then the facia around the radio housing comes off (almost, something by the lighter is still holding it),
4 screws around the radio and empty DIN sized slot under it and...
Nothing, still in there tight.

I installed a new cd player for my friend in his '98 Legacy outback. It was a total pain. We had to file down plastic to make the receiver fit above the trim ring. Plus dismantling the dash was very time consuming. On top of it, the antenna input on the new unit was on the opposite side of the cars and the antenna cable wasn't long enough so he ended up without the antenna connected (I told him we could go buy an extender but he didn't care).Installing a new headunit in my 2004 Impreza OBS on the other hand was probably the simplest install I've ever done. The whole thing(including wiring up the harness) took like 40 minutes tops.
