Cargo Box on a wrx wagon
Hey guys, I have a 2002 wrx wagon. I'm thinking about installing a set of roof racks and a cargo box on the car because I need extra storage space for my long coast to coast drive (moving from the west coast to the east). Does anyone know what's the largest cargo box that will fit?
Check out http://www.yakima.com or similar websites. They have fit guides that will tell you what you can put on your car. You might have issues with the clearance on the rear hatch, and you want to make sure you don't go over the manufacturers weight limit for the cross bars.
Good luck!

Actually, the Yakima website only tells you what rack system to buy, but doesn't really say which boxes will fit. They basically list all the boxes that are available. For example, I wonder if the biggest boxes, which measure 91 inches in length, will fit. For comparison, the wheelbase of the wrx wagon is 99 inches, and the length of the roof is considerably shorter than that. If the box is longer than the roof, the box will stick out in front right? Is that safe?

yes - it is normal for the box to extend beyond the length of the roof, especially in the front. i have a thule box mounted on yakima bars and it sticks out mostly in the front. remember, if you get a longer box (that fits skis/snowboards) like i did, then you won't be able to open the trunk all the way because the rear wing will hit the box. you'll have to load from the rear doors... or remove the rear wing.

The super moderator hit on a good point. The weight limit for the factory rails is quite low - like 100 or maybe 150#'s. Therefore, I'd think weight limits would preclude you from buying the longest box possible.
I have a Thule box on my Yakima racks which I primarily use for snowboards and boots. My rear wing stays off during the winter for this reason, or else I would not be able to open the rear hatch. Of course, this isn't going to help you on your coast to coast move...

Weight limit
Sigh... 100 pounds isn't a lot at all. This could turn out to be a real problem. I guess I can at least use it to stash bulky but not-so-heavy stuff. Maybe clothes.
Has anyone installed any particular boxes that don't prevent the trunk from opening fully?
