If you have an '04 WRX and you get the STi headlights, they will not work with your wiring harness that is in your car. You would need to purchase the STi wiring harness which includes the headlight adjustment motor wire, and the HID car wiring to STi Headlight wiring.
On another note, if you wanted to go HID, it would be a wiser decision to get the Morette's for the '04. The reflectors on those have a better beam pattern (read: puts all that light where you want it to go; in front and ahead) compared to the stock WRX reflectors which send the light up and over. You'd actually lose alot of light, bulbs like PIAA's or the like would be a better choice for the WRX reflectors. You could aim the stock WRX headlights down to compensate for the up and over beam pattern, but youd have a pretty bright spot maybe 7 feet ahead of you. In certain driving conditions that just is not safe. Anything ahead of the 7 foot floodlight would be pitch black. Just my advice.

I've used PIAA's in the past without anything going wrong with them. I recommend them. There are some people who have had horror stories with them, but its up to you. The crack in your housing may cause you to have condensation. Condensation is bad. May want to take it to Subaru on warranty. IDK what the situation is.
Here's a link to the Morette's -

in addition to what RAGE said
the STI headlight wiring harness is not a Subaru part since it is integrated into the bulkhead harness. you can however do a search in the classified section of HIIC for sti headlight harness or something to that effect and that will work on the USDM STI HID headlights.
here is one on ebay that looks good

PIAA's on the average run around $65-75 including shipping. THe best ones to use to see clearly are the Xtreme White Plus'. I think these are rated at 4300K around there. I would recommend staying away from the Super Plasma version as it is a 5000K, Blue-ish (ie, can't see $hit), and the Super Plasma GT, which is a 10000K purple-ish (ie, also, cannot see $hit). Those are also the more expensive ones. The Ion ones are good for fogs too. These are 3000K Yellow. Yellow light waves cut through rain mist (when the car in front of you makes a heavy mist during heavy rain, almost like driving through a cloud) 4000K light and above will tend to bounce off of the rain mist and just make a brighter rain mist. You will not be able to see through it. Dangerous in heavy rains. Trust me, this is not one of those "Oh, it only rains that hard sometimes" things. When you need it because you cant see, you'd wish you had them. You can get the above mentioned for a pretty respectable price at either www.tirerack.com, or www.sounddomain.com. When doing the transition to whatever bulb you choose always remember NOT to touch the bulb.
There are also HIR bulbs. I think these are only made in 9005, 9006 and H3's. They look very similar to an HID bulb. HIR bulbs recycle the Infrared Light that comes out of it and sends it back into its core, creating more Lumens. Lumens are good. The more, the brighter. I think these also use up less wattage than a standard Halogen bulb like the PIAA's. The downside to these HIR bulbs is that they are about $90 a piece. There's also a bulb called a Fatboy that puts out more Lumens, but it only comes in a 3800K < pretty much yellow. To my knowledge it only comes in H4 which will fit the BES' & BEW's.
