what would you do?

here's the story:
sneezerboi and i took a cat into the humane society on CONSIGNMENT. what that means is: we pay $75. they will check her temperament and if she's friendly, they will put her out for adoption in the cat house for 1 week. at the end of the week if she is not adopted, we will get a call saying that we can either take her back or surrender her to them. OR - if she doesn't pass the temperament test to begin with, we would get a call telling us to pick her up and get our $75 consignment fee back.

so sneezerboi brought her in. specifically said CONSIGNMENT. checked the box next to CONSIGNMENT. asked the lady if the paperwork was fine, she replied "yes".

for 6 days, we never got a call back from the humane society. so, i call them only to find out she's been EUTHANISED. why? no idea.

we talk to the supervisor who puts me on hold to grab the hard copy of the paper we signed. she tells me that in fact, the cat was on CONSIGNMENT (not surrendered or for euthanasia).

we wait until the next day to see what they have to say because they had no answers for us at that given moment. we go down to talk to the supervisor who takes down a detailed scenario of what happened the day we brought our tiger in. she tells us that she would call us. we don't take that for an answer. we talk to everyone there. however, the only person who can get us a copy of the paper we signed was in a "meeting"

when he (the manager of operations) finally calls us, he tells us things like "i have my own life" and "we will not have this conversation." to be honest without going into detail, he was a COMPLETE A$$.

he makes us wait over the weekend for an "investigation".

we got a call today.
they tell us that it was indeed their fault and that they are sorry.

where do we go from here? what do you suggest josh and i do from here? any suggestions?

i need serious answers - meaning: no "i would kill them/punch them" etc.
this is begining to be a serious matter and i need advice.

go here for more a more detailed story as we have been updating here.

dude that sucks, i don't think there is really anything you can do, if your thinking about suing them, you'd probably win, but my question to you is what do you want to get out of all this?

Call KHON of KGMB and tell them your story.....I'm a fellow pet owner, and if something like this happened, I would like to know about it before ever taking my pet there. Help your fellow pet owners, by letting the public know what happened....tell them your story.

theres not really any action you can take against the humane society. they are a county organization, so suing them would be *******-ish, despite how badly the ****ed up. I would push to get those involved in the situation fired so that it doesn't happen again and get the story into the media.

concur... I'd have this issue made public. People need to know about the unprofessional conduct provided by a county organization and unnecessary taking of a life (all be it an animal life, it's still a life), I'm sure there are other organizations that will be outraged by this issue.

Just make sure you stick to the facts. Emotional outbursts will not help. Facts and only facts.

that's messed up...sorry to hear about your cat. i am a cat lover too, and if something like that happened to my cat, i would feel the same way. the manager who called you back doesn't have the right to talk to you that way. he should have at least given you a sincere apology whether or not it's their fault. needless to say that they can never give you back your cat.
you should do what you feel is right. you are the one who lost this pet and obviously, you cared for it. i am not saying that you should sue or go to the media...all i'm saying is how far do you want to take this, and are you willing to put up a fight for it? it won't be easy and it may or may not lead you to something.
the other option is ask for a letter of apology, involve the media if you have to, and make it into a positive, and learning experience for everyone involved so it will never happen again...don't forget to ask for a replacement pet.
again, the humane society does a lot of goodwill to the community especially to the animals. they are non-profit, but i'm sure they have their own flaws as well...good luck!

That is horrible. My wife and I have adopted 2 cats from the HHS and USED to donate regularly both monetarily and products to their charity auctions. After reading this story we have decided to let them know that we are ceasing donations until this problem is resolved and/or the manager is no longer with the organization. If possible, could you post or PM the manager in questions name so that we can mention him by name when they call again for their event coming up next month. While he may not have been involved in the actual mess up that got your cat euthanized, he did the worst possible job as a manager (the job that he is paid to do) in handling the situation after the mistake was made.

Wow MArcy. I hope you and sneezerboi can get this resolved. I have been going through some expensive treatments for our BB, and he actually stopped breathing one day. I would have been very sad if we lost him, but that was under vet supervision.

This however, IS a completely different situation. I agree that this needs to be made public. There are many reasons why it happened. But someone made a FATAL mistake, and needs to be held accountable. I'd hate to think that it wasn't a mistake and they actually don't give a fark, you know?
Anyway try to get a hold of a news crew so you can get this aired. Until it gets settled, I wouldn't accept any monetary payment from them, as you may surrender your right to a wrongful death case.

I am very sorry, as you guys both know my love for pets. Good luck

So was this your personal pet or a cat that you found and were trying to help out? Lets be reasonable here and look at things from an outside perspective; yes it is sad that they put the cat down but unfortunately the humane society has to put down thousands of animals every year and I can see how it would be possible to make that mistake with an unknown animal randomly put in a pen for adoption with a bunch of other cats. I understand you are upset, but at the same time whenever someone posts up that something bad happens about anything/anywhere everyone immediatly jumps up and is like "oh man **** them they should all die" ect... i think you guys should decide what you really want out of this before you end up ruining the careers of the vets there or damaging an overall good institution for an honest mistake. That said, my cat died last week and then i hit another one with my car the next day and it didnt die immediatly, so believe me i feel your pain....
-Mike

P.S. the manager didnt have to be a dick tho....

Thats some messed up Shiiz...In a way they didnt conduct their business in a manner that they are expected too. I mean yah there are alot of cats here in hawaii especially the starys but still, they are at the very least obligated to try to find a loving and supporting home for the animal but to just go ahead and euthanize the cat, its just down right wrong unless there was a factor that made them felt that the cat would pose a problem. Who are they to play God!!! Josh and Mercy, hope the link below helps..

I am sorry about Tiger.
Remember there is always someone higher up, I would file a complaint concerning how you were treated by the Manager (every humane society has a board) and ask for an explanation as to how this happened, they at least owe you that.
They are probably keeping quiet because anything they admit to can be used against them if you try to sue. I would stress to them that your gaol is for this not to happen to other pets/owners rather than revenge and they might be more amicable.
If this fails than I guess the the media option may work....
The HHS is used to being sued so they would probably just settle with you out of court and then nothing would get resolved.

Just have them into "media consignment," wonder how long they will survive?
