what do you recommend?

I'm planning on changing my coolant, and brakes and was wondering what everyone else uses. I would use the oem coolant from subaru, but subaru doesn't have it. As for brakes I have no idea. The brakes would be used only for street purposes. So if you could help me out and let me know what you use and where you got it I would appreciate it. thanks

I used the Prestone or whatever off the shelf brand is the one that says it is for all makes/models once in my Bugeye...worked just fine. Currently have the Subaru fluid with Water Wetter and GMS Thermostat. Either way, you will not see a difference on your OEM water temp gauge...they are made to not show much variation unless you get really hot which will not usually happen in street conditions unless your thermostat fails (closed) or your car catches fire.

Brake fluid I recommend Ate Super Blue...it is a little lower rated in terms of temperature handling but it will last longer than the other performance/street brake fluids.

what Blake said.

I am currently using Zerex or Prestone (whatevers on sale). And ATE Super Blue for my brake fluid.

I agree with blake and Jess. When I flused my coolant, i just bought the cheapest one at walmart. It was the supertech brand(maybe the same supertech that makes valves?)50/50 premix.

As far as brake fluid is concern ATE Super Blue is the way to go imho.

On my 2003 WRX I used Prestone along with Water Wetter and this:
SOA635071 Subaru Cooling System Conditioner

Servco Subaru had it in stock ($4.00) last time I did a coolant change.

Oh yeah I forgot that I have that conditioner too...I basically just went half-sies with another Subaru guy and he bought it for both of us which is why I forgot.

came across this post but was just curious if anyone knows why subaru doesn't use the OEM coolant? also, i thought that it was recommended to? just got a 05 lgt and wanted to do the flush and came across that when i went to the dealer to pick up some. i thought i read that certain types of coolant can cause issues later on in the cooling system? ended up using the zerex asian coolant.

I was curious too, but as long as you use the conditioner you should be good. I ended up using peak long life (I read its similar to oem). Here is a good thread with some information on coolant. Cooling System FAQ: Read if you want coolant information! - NASIOC
