We've all been there...
People here in Hawaii, that I've met and talked with, have some of the downpipes listed below: In no particular order...
I have the PDE Downpipe and B&B Catback on my 04 STI and am real happy with both...I get a unique sound different from most other WRX's and STI's...My cousin has the stock downpipe and a custom 3" HKS High Power on his STI...sounds good as well...you just have to listen to a bunch to get an idea...
1. PDE
2. Cobb
3. Invidia
4. Perrin
5. Godspeed
6. Helix
7. HKS
Some DP's tend not to trigger cels as much as others...The PDE is one of these as well as the Godspeed (due to their design)...but then again, if you get a Cobb Accessport, you won't care if you do anyways...I think I pulled two cels after the first month of getting my PDE put on...seemed like after a backfire or two...just put the Accessport on and reset it...
HKS is pretty cheap...but made of mild steel...not stainless...
Helix seems really nice with a nice price...
Just go to the meets and talk with a few of the guys there...you'll learn a lot.
I personally like the APS 3.5" Turbo Back...3.5" from the big belmouth to the end...sounded mean on Carlo's STI...
Good Luck,

I got the PDE up/down combo..............love it. My car sounded like something out of the jetsons before I got my exhaust put in. But like everyone says best bet to check out the reviews section
based on research i do, i would have to go with Crucial Racing. both uppipe and downpipe are ceramic coated (2400 F) for higher exhaust gas velocity and heat supression. The downpipe is a divorced wastegate design and keeps the 3rd cat. I myself plan to get these pieces in the future. My $0.02.

The crucial dp is nice, the uppipe looks good too although it has no flex section.
Stromung now makes a ceramic coated dp wich looks very comparable to the crucial(and cheaper too.
)
I don't know about your emissions laws, but I live in cali so I'm in a little different situation.
I had the helix catless dp and loved it, except for the smell, I still have the uppipe with the stock dp. When I get another dp I'll be leaning toward a shorty design so I can bolt it up to the third cat, for the stealth appearance, ie. Stromung, Bosal, Daddys or crucial.
If I had the money I'd get this

all of these look good. I'd most defenitely get a flex uppipe though, unless you like changing the gaskets all the time.
Oh yeah, DON'T get the HKS dp, it has a flat flange design that blocks the wastgate gasses. It's basicaly the same design as the stock one without the cats.
Just my $.02

I
personally am not convinced ceramic coating is worthwhile post turbo (downpipe, catback). I've had ceramic coated and non coated downpipe, no difference other than looks that my butt-dyno could tell. Pre-turbo, coat everything. Post-turbo, a waste of money IMHO.
