Its a good time, its more humid in August than most other months, but the weather will be great so no worries. Its almost never a had time here, just like Mario mentioned it has a rainy season, but its almost welcome when it comes to cool the place down.

Heres the average temps:

Average rainfall:

Average snowfall, just in case you were curious.

Of course check the snowfall for the big island and you get a different picture. So wierd...

August stats:

Sure thing, where you coming from anyways? How long you gonna be here? What activities are you planning? If you let us know we can probably make some suggestions and all. This is a very helpful group to say the least. You will probably get more than you wanted.

Well, we will be coming from Chicago and will stay 6 nights and 7 days...our entire stay will be at Honolulu with perhaps a day trip to Oahu...so far no plans...was just wondering though,

1)should we be doing our own touring and sightseeing or go with a planned tour which is part of a vacation package?

2)also, where would the best places be for shopping...

3)suggestions for tourist attractions on both honolulu and oahu would be great.

4)is there also a need to rent a car for couple of days if we were to do some sightseeing. care to lend us an STi loaner???

5) What are some good places to eat...both casual that natives go to and also for some formal out on the town type of dining

6) Any recommendations for the best beaches around town...both private and public...i guess those are some initial questions we have for starters.

All comments appreciated...thanks, Ghost

1) Planned tours suck, they take you to the worst places at the worst schedules. I rather rent your own car(you can get those 2.5RS's fairly easily). 6 D/N's are enough to see around the island. I would take the first 2 nights at Waikiki the next 4 around the island.

2) Shopping...Ala Moana Shopping Center is a good pick with its abundance of stores and location. Pearlridge is kinda far off. Waikiki has alot of stores also. Ward.

3) Waikiki. Circle Isle(going around the island). Haunauma Bay. Polynesian Cultural Center. Dole Plantation. Chinatown. Go on those submarine tours. Pearl Harbor. Want Souvieneers are pretty cheap prices...go to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet. Ward Center...

4) Alot of 2004 2.5RS's here for rental.

5) Casual: Plate lunch places. Chinese Dim Sum. Vietnamese Pho dineries.
Formal: Assagios, Morton's, etc etc.

6) Kailua Beach Park is truely beautiful. Turtle Bay is also great...must go snorkling at Haunauma Bay. Waikiki beach(stay away from Queen's). Go to Waianae side and go to Kaena Point and Yokohama Bay. Sandy's. Waimea beach. Pipeline.

Agreed, they suck. Dont do it. You can rent a car and get around island easily enough on your own. Dont go with some planned schedule.

Yeah, Ala Moana is probably best. Its good for the touristy items and such. Ward Center area is good too, just a mile or so west of Waikiki

3) Waikiki. Circle Isle(going around the island). Haunauma Bay. Polynesian Cultural Center. Dole Plantation. Chinatown. Go on those submarine tours. Pearl Harbor. Want Souvieneers are pretty cheap prices...go to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet. Ward Center...

Definitely Haunauma Bay for snorkleing, Poly Center up north is a must-see, Dole Plantation up north too so you can hit the maze. Pearl Harbor for sure.

Yep, only rental car to get. Not sure which companies rent em tho.

5) Casual: Plate lunch places. Chinese Dim Sum. Vietnamese Pho dineries.
Formal: Assagios, Morton's, etc etc.

Kailua is my favorite beach, good swimming and waves wont beat you do death. Waikiki for the crowded swimming experience, but still nice and very convenient. Waimea Beach on North Shore is a must-see as well, its beautiful. You need to drive from town and go through Haleiwa and then from there take Kam Hwy up around the north shore area and stop at the different beached. Oh the Waimea Park or whatever they call it has some nice sites just across from the beach. Once you hit Turtle Bay you would probably wanna check it out and head back the way you came since continuing on is a long (but beautiful) drive up around the north end, might not be interested in it.
Definitely start planning the activities tho before coming. Otherwise once you get here you will be overwhelmed.

A rental car is probably a must. We do have a good bus system, but it's much more fun to do your own driving on your schedule.
Try to plan daily outings to avoid rush hour as the traffic here is the pits.
I would recommend trying to make it to another island(s) even if you fly over and spend a day. Which one depends on what you are looking to do.
As mentioned the weather is the warmest during August but most of the times we have trade winds which keep it comfortable.

I'd be willing to rent out my STi, but you probably couldn't afford my daily rates. Go for the RS rental and you'll have a blast! I had a lousy minivan when I went to the Big Island recently and I still had a blast sqawking the tires on the curves.

For places to eat I can recommend a couple of fine dining spots. Palomino and Aaron's atop Ala Moana. Both have EXCELLENT food. Even though I say 'fine dining' you can still show up in khaki's and a polo shirt. That is dressed up here.

I just got back from the city of big shoulders and I had a blast out there. Hope you have as much fun here, as I did there.

Definitely rent a car, and definitely try to come out to the track (West Side of the island near the end of H-1) and meet a few. Nothing like taking a rental down the 1/4

When my family came out last year, I sent them on a day trip to the Big Island (Hawaii). It was perfect. They got to do the volcano park, and a few other things too. IT was a good break from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.

mehlt is right: AVOID RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. Between 3:30 and 6:30 in the afternoon traffic IN and out of Honolulu is horrendous. During the morning, it is easy to get out of Honolulu, but don't try coming in after 6-6:30. Wait until 9 or 10.

Enjoy your stay.

You should also take atleast one drive on H-3 from the west to the east....I drive on it almost everyday.....and most people say its some of the best views they've ever seen.

If you enjoy the outdoors you might also want to consider going to Kuuloa Ranch. I think the have some organized tours on ATVs that are supposedly pretty cool. A lot of movies have been filmed there....Windtalkers, Tears of the Sun, etc.
