Wanting a good/easy video editing software

I recently bought a Sony HandyCam digital video camcorder. The software that came with it is not as user friendly as I had expected or maybe I am just not understanding it. But all I want to do is get the video from the camera to my HD so I can save it or burn it to a CD or something but that seems impossible. My OS is XP media edtion.

Have you tried using Windows Movies Maker? The Win XP Media edition should have it loaded. WMM very basic in features, is pretty easy to use.

If you want Studio 9 lemme know. About the same as Movie Maker, just more features, but it sounds like you got what you needed.

For home-kine movie editing i havn't been too impressed with Windows Movie Maker. It works, but it's lacking options. Ulead makes an ok one as do some others, but the last one i tried which i thought wasn't bad was Pinnacle Studio. It was rather inexpensive at CompUSA and really easy to use. It will get you all the basic non-destructive editing, transitions, titles, and all that.

If you're wanting even more power than that, you can try Adobe Premier. It's a bit heftier on the price, but gives control over much more (you can keyframe properties, do masks, etc.) It depends on what you want to do and how much you're willing to spend. I'd say start with Pinnacle Studio and if you start to feel limited then download the demo for Premier and try that out.

It just looks intimidating. It's not that bad.

The first time i fired up Adobe Premier and looked at it i had _no clue_ where to even begin. After i skimmed the first chapter of the help file, i learned about the resource bin (similar in most video editors) and the timeline and it all clicked. With most Adobe products the hardest part is figuring out where you are in the program (as in" these options effect what exactly?"). Once you know where you are and what you're editing, the software makes a lot of sense and actually has a natural workflow to it. Give it another try. You might just suprise yourself.
