Yup the manual will cover most of the basic. And if you can spend sometime online on photography forums to learn Exposure, Composition, and other External Factors, that would be a bonus. Bookstore like borders or barnes and nobles have great photography books. Once you acquired that basic knowledge, keep shooting anything, you will learn from trial and error.
I am usually free on late afternoon weekend, and like to shoot at golden hours, pm me if anything.
Thanks
Note: post some pix!

If you can't understand anything the manual says like me, do as Norris said and jump on a photography forum or instruction website. They'll usually try to explain things in an easier way.
And A LOT of trial and error helps. Just do things to your camera, and see how it turns out, and what you like and dont like. You can just fool around in your house. That's what I did.
Here's a good thread on NASIOC:

Joe-E/Jon/Norris/**** offer some great tips!!! Dont be afraid to carry with you your manual as thats what I did just as a reference. I noticed that you too are also a Canon shooter like the 4 mentioned above and POTN.com(Photographers On The Net)for the Canon shooter and "nikonians.org" for the Nikon shooters, Pentax Forums.com for the Pentax shooters(if there is any on here), is another great resource to use, hell you can go to borders to read up on photography and check out chicks at the same time!!
