The uppipe install isn't very hard if you know your way around cars... If you're not comfortable modding the car - it might be a bit of a confusing journey.

You need a couple of specialty tools/items (o2 sensor wrench, penetrating lubricant, anti-seize, etc.) and 4 sturdy/high jackstands.

It's like installing the OS on a computer. It's not the hardest job in the world, but if you've never done it before it can become confusing REAL quick.

Uppipe installs usually go smoothly, but the stray job can come up where something breaks/strips/rounds/goes FUBAR and then it's a CHORE to bring things back in line.

I recommend going from under the car (not pulling the turbo like some suggest) and jacking up the motor to get clearance on the stock uppipe removal.

Trimming the heatshield is not a must, but you should do it if you plan on taking the header off regularly. Definitely DON'T leave it out of the car.

The heat shield that some leave out is the turbo heat shield and that's trimmed when you install a downpipe.

If you can change the motor mount in a car, the uppipe shouldn't be so hard. If you wouldn't feel comfortable doing that - then I'd recommend getting a group of friends together or finding a shop to do it...

Aloha,
Richard...

well, I wouldn't exactly compare installing an uppipe to loading an OS, .... but uhh .... :weird:

a Dremel tool usually comes in handy. cutting opening in the heat sheild for the O2 sensor wire to 'slide' out makes future adventures, .... well, less of an adventure.
and if you only have a 'basic' set of tools, be very careful to what tools you try to use as a "substitute" b/c the friken nuts and bolts on a suby will strip, or break, really easy sometimes!!

You do have new gaskets, correct? You will need them, it'd be nice if you have some 'thicker than stock' gaskets to use.

A lot of us used Shiv's install instructions..... http://www.vishnutuning.com/files/St...Inst_v_3_1.doc

No leaks for me. But I think it was the help I had.

well i just did an install on Palabans car with the same uppipe and i must say that we had a lot of fun ( ).

First of all you have to put on your own studs. when we finally got the studs on we found that we had to cut the studs on the back of the turbo to connect the downpipe to the turbo. we had the studs pretty well torqued down so I don't think it was our error. Other than that everything was ok

make sure you don't loose the studs

Jon

get a sensor socket!

up pipe

1. Remove the I C unit
2. Remove the turbo’s heat shield
3. Jack up the front of the car and place it on jack stands
4. Remove lower engine splash shield (12mm bolts and push-in retainers)
5. Remove the front A/F sensor (O2)
6. Remove right side exhaust manifold’s heat shield
7. Remove the mid catalytic unit (down pipe)
8. Remove the turbo’s nuts to the pre-cat. unit (up pipe)
9. Disconnect the EGT connector
10. Remove the left exhaust manifold
11. Remove the engine mounts' nuts 2 ( both l and r)
12. Jack up the engine using a wood block at the oil pan ( make sure not to dent it)
13. Slide the old pre cat out from the bottom of the engine
14. Transfer the EGT on to the new up pipe
15. Installations:
16. Loosen the turbo’s brackets- do not remove the nuts and bolts
17. Install the new upper gasket on to the up pipe
18. Slide the new up pipe in place
19. Tighten the nuts- criss-cross pattern
20. REnstall the exhaust manifold
21. Reinstall the heats shields and A/F sensor (O2)
22. Tightened the turbo’s brackets
23. Reinstall the mid-cat unit (downpipe)
24. Lower the engine and reinstall the engine mounts
25. Reconnect the EGT connetor
26. Reinstall the turbo’s heat shield and IC unit.
Note: You may cut the heat shield above the O2 sensor like what Sean had suggested. Using penetrating oil will ease the removal of the fasteners and will avoid stripped thread.
You can have the up pipe installed at Schuman but it will cost you
$99 an hour and your warranty-ha!
install time: approx 1.3hr

rode my bike yesterday on pouring rain and it started to miss and stalled couple of times- turned out to be the no. 1 and 4 plugs took in some water ( the coil unit was loose and wasn't sealing good)- replaced them today runs better than b4.
So are yougoing to watch the Biker Boys biker boy??-hahaha!
