Tuners in HI?

Just curious if there are decent tuners there in Oahu? Just reading some of the stages TurboXS and some other tuners are running and Im interested. Just curious who has had luck there with what companies.

Much appreciated.

Some beer and mocha blasts. For the installation that is. But for parts buy through Speadgear or the internet.

Im all over that. As long as you like Corona and MGD, about all I drink. Well that and 151 and Coke, which is my favorite.

Speedgear is a local shop?

Yes, Farid owns it and Dylan runs it and they are pretty cool to us Subie guys. The Silver Subie with the CF hood you have posted in your pics section titled under Speed Hawaii is Farid's car. Most of the other local shops don't even carry any Subie parts. They usually have to order it much like you would go through the internet anyway. Farid at least carries parts in stock so if you really want something now you can just pick it up w/o having to pay shipping. And as far as putting stuff on we all help each other. Many cases we have to redo the installs the shops have done to some cars.

Awesome, what a resource you guys are. Cant thank everyone in this forum enough for all the information I have gathered. I have posted in the "tech" forums as requested by the Admin and have gotten ZERO replies. If I had posted the same questions in here I would have 10 replies atleast by now. So annoying...

Thanks and hope to be on island within the month...

Just to reiterate what Jayson is saying...There are many many parts that you can get that are WRX specific or non-specific here on the island. The prices might seem a little inflated at times, but you get two things, the part right now and no shipping (that's probably why the prices are sometimes steeper).

And, as far as 'tuners', as long as you are talking about excellent advice as to what parts are crap and which are good; and about having excellent 'wrench turners' who've put countless parts on their cars and are more than happy to help you out (read: Sean, Mike, Richard, Jayson, Dan, Wes, Ed...), then you're asking the right question.

But understand, there are no professional 'tuners' that I know of on the island who have an AWD dyno and the knowledge of how to set your car up to have perfect timing, boost, and A/F ratio.

You have to rely on, for the st4 for instance, someone on the mainland to program your Unichip (or whatever EM you decide on) according to the particular parts you have purchased. In my case, I can personally tune my own car...but I'm like a blind man in a cathouse...I end up screwing the wall.

that's b/c you really don't let anyone else drive or try to tune your car!!!
That's ok though, you gotta learn it somehow, right?
and by the time you get back, the WBo2 will be ready to play with.

Pat,

Thanks for the information. I know I will bein good hands with everyone there. The advice I have already gotten is invaluable in my decisions. I think I will wait until I have the keys to my WRX and then start the modification barrage at that point.

Cant wait to get there. Its cold here!!!

Dave,

I agree with what everyone said though I have found a local installer (Sonic Motorsports) who I'm comfortable with doing work on my car. They don't specialize in Subies, but they've worked on quite a few. Of course you should take advantage of the install days! You can't beat the price and you have a LOT of professionals to tap into.
Just don't give them too much beer until the parts are on.

Since there are no commercial subie tuners in Hawaii you'll have to do it yourself or if you stick with popular mods the mainland tuners (Vishnu, TurboX, etc..) should be able to provide good baseline maps for unichip, ECUTEK, etc..

Speaking of installs, has anyone install a Blitz turbo timer with the non-factory alarm (Auto mate?) that Schuman pedals off on folks? My manual turbo timer is not working well these days.

Tim

I'm telling you. I want you to drive it.

The map that I started with last night I had made while making a few passes down in the gulch. Got it to where it didn't knock at all. Maybe because of the drop in about 800 ft asl, fluctuation of the barometer, and since the map was new and the ECU hadn't learned it yet; I was knocking all over the place last night down at the track. I know you would drive through the knock, you said so yourself. Of course, there really isn't any difference between you or I driving through the knock, is there? I guess the only difference is that I have no one to blame but myself if I blow a piston.

Let me get it to where it's at least safe. If I get off of my lazy butt and take her down to the gulch, I might be going again tonight. Or maybe you could come up here and we make a few passes????

Hey, tell me again the name of that Starion or generic DSM engine. What the pros and cons that makes it a good possibility for putting into my Triumph?

Tim,

I have the same question (same setup, too) Other than the fact that the more I read the less I feel I need a TT, (read: NO PERFORMANCE MODS) the whole problem with installing with the aftermarket alarm made me think twice.

I was looking at the Blitz DC2 both online and at Speedgear... I like the fact that it has it's own boost gauge of sorts.

Anyone... anyone... Bueller? Bueller?
