Thread sealant for rear diff plugs?

I was going to check and/or change the oil in my rear diff and I saw that the factory service manual recommends a certain type of thread sealant. A pretty long search revealed that the particular sealant is not readily available in the U.S., and no one had any suggestions for a substitute.

I called Servco parts and the guy I talked to said that he has never delivered that part to the service guys so his assumption is that they don't use it.

So... do I need the thread sealant? If so, does anyone have a source or easily acquired substitute? Also, what type/brand of oil is everyone using in their rear diffs? Thanks.

I have never used any sealant on my plugs and I have never leak any diff fluid. But if you are worried about leakeage you can use some Teflon tape.

Yeah, same here. Never used any sealant on mine, never has leaked. Really wouldn't be concerned about it.

i dont think i added...though if you have available you can add some thread sealant....either a dab of silicone, what 4080 said...either tape or paste...just dont use any red type locktites...

for trans and rearend oil...i believe this already has the friction modifier in them...

I got the thread sealer from Napa. You don't have to use the uber-unobtanium Subaru stuff, just get the working man's version at Napa.

actually it's called threebond. threebond is a japan sealant and when ordering it, it is only available in a large tube like caulking. The one that I have is pink in color and there are two variations that I believe Subaru uses. I cannot remember the P/N though. One is pink and one is gray.

when I broke the seal on mine there was grey stuff on the threads so I'm guessing it's the latter.

yeah, I believe the pink one that I used was actually for the automatic transmission pan. However I had never used it again as that stuff is completely awesome and seals well if done properly. ThreeBond was used in all kinds of stuff that I have repaired over the years that came from japan.

ThreeBond is available in smaller tubes but when ordering the P/N listed it came in a large caulking tube.
