Thermal wrap on up and dp?

Wonder if you need thermal wrap on dp (especially) and/or uppipe to reduce possibility of fire or other hazards,..

Read a post where dp on LGT being so close to firewall insulator, so he cut material for prevention of fire,...Another member actually had a fire under the hood, but probably due to his splicing O2 wire. Someone with a WRX also had similiar problem with heat coming off dp.

So other than ziptieing any wires and moding and reusing heat sheild, do you need to thermal wrap??

Technically thermal wrap will lower engine bay temp and prevent heat soak. It also keeps the heat in so the exhaust gas stay hot. You don't really need it but it is good to have. It is less risky wrapping the dp than the up pipe. Pay extra attention when you're wrapping the dp... any oil/fluids stuck on the wrap might cause fire hazard.

Either thermal wrap or ceramically coated the dp and up...

I took mine to Hi-Tech Coatings by HRP. I paid $75 to ceramic coat my uppipe. Ask for Ty, they did a great job. They coated the inside as well.

Careful...

I would just get the pipes and header coated on the outside...I've heard horror stories of the coating flaking and getting sucked into the turbo when the parts are coated on the inside (header and up-pipe)...

My engine bay does get hot, but I chose not to wrap my header due to the reason Chucky mentioned...When oils and other flammable liquids spill onto the "fire retardent" material, and the right conditions are met, fires can start in your engine bay...

I am also wondering if holding the heat in contributes to all the cracked header problems I've been reading about...regardless, the seller of my header, XXTuning, stated that they saw very little in the way of performance gain between wrapped vs. unwrapped...haven't tried it though, so what I said may or may not hold up...

^^^ I heard of the cracked header too mostly because the header is coated on the outside only. The inside get super hot and the outside is exposed to the element (like water b/c the splash guard doesn't fit or some don't bother to put it back on) Crack coating... bummer...

^^^ Not if you do it right. Good metallic-ceramic coat can withstand 2000F at the minimum.

Bobby, when I went, I didn't mind waiting until they did a batch of ceramic coating various things. So I had to wait a little less than a week. They can do it that day I believe but it will cost more. Just give Ty a call to make sure.

Damn I hope that doesn't happen to me, although I made sure to check the inside for any loose ceramic pieces but didn't find any. Oh well, if that happens, I guess I gotta get a bigger turbo
