STI detonation

I know there's been a lot written about this in the STI forum but I was curious about what local STI owners have experienced.

Any fellow STI owners experiencing detonation?
Where are you purchasing gas?
Mixing in 100?

Its been a couple years since I've really heard knocking/pinging but I'm pretty sure I was hearing it the other week. I made a good, hard pull through 3rd and 4th getting on H3 in the middle of the day and heard it near 5k for the first time. And I've heard it 2 times since with a new tank of gas.

First tank was chevron second was 76. Whats everyones thoughts. I'm into my car but.....I'll be pretty pissed if I need to drive to town to mix gas along with putting out $40 each time.

I don't think I'm getting any. At the track day on Sat I thought I heard something but I think it was the stock BOV.

I haven't heard any either, but several factors could attribute to that:

1) Road noise and stereo are generally loud
2) I generally don't go push it hard often (WOT, redline pulls, etc..)
3) I shift at or around 4K RPM most of the time. The car pulls really well up to that anyways.
4) When I am pushing the car I usually have a helmet on and am too busy dodging (aka as hitting) cones.

Either way I'm following the ping/det threads closely here and on "other" sites. Hopefully SOA will acknowledge a problem and develop a fix. Beyond that there are always the tuners who will eventually come out with something that cleans it up and perhaps pulls out some more ponies.

I have noticed that my gas mileage sucks. I think I got around 15-16 mpg on my last tank. So after my last fill I decided to try and drive like a granny for a tank. Just curious how much better it will be.

I was curious so I tried the following:

Cruising at around 2K RPM in 3rd I went WOT and held it up to around 6K RPM. I tried this a few times in both 3rd and 4th with the radio / AC off and windows up.

Nothing. This is where most people are hearing detonation.

When I have the time and the opportunity I'm gonna try a few different things too. I'm glad you havent had any problems Mehlt. To be honest I'm probably too gentle with my car, usually shifting around 3500rpm. I've been getting about 22-23mpg since the beginning and I'm hoping for a couple more once I switch to synthetic.

I'm also wondering where everyone's getting their gas from? Hopefully it was just a hot day with some bad gas....

I'll probably get some laughs, but I continue to get my gas from Costco. No problems yet.

My gas mileage is still in the mid to high teens, but very little of that is freeway driving and most of it is going up and down hills with a lot of stop and go.

BTW, when I did my WOT pulls I peaked out at 16psi of boost.

Theory on the ECU is that it adjusts to the detonation, but has a short term memory.

I drove an STi last night. It was pinging A LOT!

That was at night. Partial throttle.

Pings all over the place.

It is fast, however.

I wonder if it's just the crap 91 octane that is here in Cali? Hawaii gets somewhat better non-oxygentated 92 octane....

I've heard detonation on the STi and it's not a pretty sound

2nd gear, uphill, WOT, 4-5K RPM = BBs in the tin can...

On the bright side I never drive the car like that, as I was trying to troubleshoot a problem with my EGT gauge/probe.

I guess I'll wait and see how others on the mainland do with the ECU reflash that is suppose to fix the problem.

Hmm, tried that yesterday (not sure what hill you were going up) on my runs over Pali a couple times and couldnt get any detonation. I run the 92 shell or 76 only.

Ah well crap that was the problem. Actually I did hear it today, I probably always had the radio on too loud. Some WOT runs over Pali today without the radio on helped...

Has anyone talked to Schuman Subaru about how they are going to handle this? It sounds like SOA has a reflash from SOJ and that folks on the mainland will have to take their cars in and wait while their ECUs are sent to get a reflash.
