There's a couple GC guys in the mainland running 17x9's, but with rolled fronts, pulled rears, stretched tires and lots of camber. It can be done, but it won't be easy. I'm pretty sure that 18x8.5 +38 would work, but not with a 245/40.

1st set
18x8.5
+38 offset
tires 245/40/18
But you should do what bran said rolled fronts, pulled rears, stretched tires (225/40/18) instead of the 245!
also are you running coilover? that's a must.
I'm running a 17x9 +30 offset with 235/40/17 on my 4dr. rolled and pulled the fenders!

jess on my +44 18x8.5 235/40 i had just a little clearence between my coil and inner tire. i think with that type of offset you won't be able to do it on 245's it will need to be in the lower offsets.
right now i'm running 17x8 +47 on 235/40 and from the looks i may be able to stuff 245/40's under there
