reverse lights out... help!

So I go in for my safety inspect yesterday and evidently my reverse lights are out. I changed the bulbs and the fuse (neither of which were bad from looking at them but better to be safe) but they still dont work. I'm not too good with electrical stuff and I dont really know where else to look and I refuse to pay Firestone a hundred bucks to diagnose the problem unless I have to. The car sat for 6 months while I was deployed and I dont think this was an issue before. Anyone have any ideas on where the problem could be?

if u have an electrical tester or borrow it from someone you can check if your wiring may have been cut off somewhere

There are 2 switches on the driver's side mid/rear of the transmission. They have 2 wires coming out of them and a 17mm(?) hex head. One is the neutral position switch and the other is for reverse lights. A simple swap of the plugs will tell you a lot.

After the plug switch...if your reverse lights work either in or out of gear and your car idles weird, the switch is your problem.

If not, pull out the volt meter and start checking circuit continuity.
