The only reason I would work is because I enjoy it, and it pays for the vacations and toys. My wife needs work to cover groceries and kids eduction, retirement and health insurance. Out of every $1,500 paycheck $750 goes to her PERA, 401K, health insurance and taxes!
I think without her car payment and having the IRS paid off in April, the extra $1,000 per month would help us live okay there...
Still sucky schools. Now to find her a job and get the details on private school and the cost for the 3 kids.

My family of four live comfortably on $4-5K/mo, and I'm still able to pocket a fairly good amount per month, (Having a working spouse rocks). Albeit, I do shop at the commissary and military exchage, my children are young and my mortgage is low. You should be comfortable on $6K a month + working spouse.

My 2 cents
That 'mainland mentality' is also one of the reasons I chose to move here. Not only are the people here nicer, but there also seems to be a stronger sense of family here. It just seems more wholesome, the children are more respectful, and you don't have to worry about your kids getting kidnapped or shot at school. Provided you can get them in a good school, I think Hawaii is an excellent place to raise children.
I think the best things Hawaii has to offer are the beaches, the climate, and the people. You mentioned the last 2, but not the first. These are the things you pay for IMHO, and relocation would only make sense if you're willing to pay for things things. I think it's safe to say that a majority of the people that don't like it here don't care too much for the ocean.
It would be a waste to deal with the high cost of living if you don't plan to avail of what Hawaii offers for free.

I love the ocean, ... and will live next to it forever! ... but I don't really like it here. It's nice, just not my cup-o-tea.
I wouldn't say it's the safest place for children either, seen plenty of people missing on the nightly news.
One thing that bothers me more than others is the general "narrow minded" mentality here. Now I'm not trying to start anything, but it is a wide spread mental state here.
Luckily, I have met the people I have here, and knowing them lets me know there are many people not like that here. BUT, unfortunately, I have experienced the racism, prejudice, and narrow-mindedness that is here as well. Not just from one source either. Is that why I dislike it here, ... No.
But I just felt the urge to share my experiences while I've been here. I wouldn't want to raise my children here, as there are many other places I wouldn't either. I wish I was able to talk to more people that would have expressed their feeling about living on Oahu before I moved here.
btw, I Love all you guys!!!
