Relocation to HI questions...
Relocation to HI questions...
Hey guys,
Not sure how many of you moved to Hawaii, but got some questions for those who did.
Curious what moving companies you used and how you think they did. We are thinking of possibly shipping our Blazer, but they are asking like $1500 and it doesnt seem worth it, but if we cant sell it we might have to. I have just heard horror stories about some companies. I have a lot of computer and stereo crap that I actually want to work when it gets there.
Also curious if anyone has a suggestion about any apartment complexes near Honolulu or near there. Everything is obviously expensive, but we are just looking for a decent area. I know this is a very open-ended question, but any suggestion is appreciated.
Looking like about 3-4 weeks before we move. Going through the steps now to sell what we can. Will be crashing with the old man who just retired there and has a condo out in Waialua until we find a place.
Any suggestions about the relocation would be great. We have cats so we know they have to go into the lockup for 4 months, sheesh.
Well cant wait to get there. Hopefully will be putting the deposit on the STi within a week or so as well. Gotta wait for the cashola.
See ya all on island soon,
Dave

As fort he shipping for the Blazer, that's about average. My former boss got his Explorer shipped Door-to-door Hawaii to mainland for $1600. He showed up at his new home in Kansas and his Explorer was waiting for him (exaggeration, but pretty close to reality). $1500 does not sound like your getting taken at all.
Can't tell you too much about Island moving companies. I can't remember the name of the company the Army uses, but my stuff was OK when it got here. Other people... not so good.

I hired Classic International to move my stuff. My tape deck was 'lost' and one of my cabinets was damaged. The worst part was I couldn't file a claim because I didn't have the receipts for the lost/damaged items.
I moved last February and more than half my stuff is still sitting in boxes. I suggest looking over everything you intend to bring and ask yourself if it's really worth it. Moving is a pain in the ***, but it's far less painless when you aren't bringing unnecessary garbage.

Yeah if you do it from a Matson west coast port it's only $890. But from Vegas, it's a bit more.

I moved to and from Honolulu within the past few years. But I can't really help you too much as I came from the west coast and it's much easier and cheaper to ship things from there then from where you are.
yeah, shipping out of LA is quite a bit cheaper if you can figure a way to do it.
movers, .... don't know. some guys showed up at my house one day in VA, then just took all my stuff over here!
hehe

Not sure I will save money driving the car down to LA and shipping it. Not worth doing that to save $800 or so. Would have to fly back and gas. Oh well, will just deal with it. Then they want like $130 per 100lbs of crap other than the car. Ugh. Going to throw A LOT of stuff away this move. =)

You don't have any dogs or cats, I hope. Hawaii's quarantine rules are, IMO, an outdated and unnecessary hardship on the animals.

Oh boy, well I have 3 cats, yeah, bad news. Had em for years so they are coming. 4 months in quarantine and about $1200 per cat, not fun!!!
Yeah no place yet but to crash with Dad. Gotta look for a somewhat affordable apartment once we get there and then when we both get jobs we will try and find a house we can afford. From all the looking we did houses are seriously expensive.
Ugh.

yes, houses are pretty expensive, and don't expect the 'quality' to be on par with most mainland places. If you rent, you're selection on apartments/townhomes/houses will be down because you have pets, a lot of places don't allow pets.
Also, you'll be lucky to find a place with central air conditioning, which sucks IMO.(I love my A/C!
) I don't know what kind of $$ you plan on spending, but of course that's really the determining factor on what you'll be able to get.

Great, I just gotta keep thinking about the ocean and the sun and the HOT ASIAN CHICKS. Otherwise I wont want to move there. It just sounds expensive as hell there. We wont have the cats for 4 months while they are in quarantine so I wont worry about the no pets deal for now. We were looking at houses here in Vegas and for $175000 or so we could build a nice 5 bedroom with pool, heck in Hawaii we are going to have to spend $250000 to get something we like and probably more than that. ugh. Oh well. Start looking for the little shack in the middle of the jungle...
to give you an example of what places may cost, ... my old apartment, 2bdrm, 1bath, small 800 or less sq ft, 1 parking space, sells for about $150-160k. (Apartments/townhomes complexes, whatever you want to call them, don't have 'rental offices' like everywhere on the mainland(except for a handful of places). They are Rented out/Sold individually, which makes the apartment shopping experience a little different.
I would recomend getting a realtor you are comfortable with for finding a house. It was easier for my friend to find a place in Spain than it was for me to find an "acceptable" place here.
if you haven't already, check out hawaiishomes.com, it may be of some help.

If you jump through a few hoops and prove to Hawaii that you have given your cats the necessary tests, then they're a little more lenient. I don't think we paid $1200 per dog, either.

Yeah I have to have planned ahead 3 months ago. Its a pain in the ***. If I had gotten all the shots here and gotten all these blood tests I could qualify for the 1 month, but the move sorta came quicker than we thought. Heck we just moved to Vegas 3 months ago from Boise and now we move again. Oh well. The cats will have to deal with it. My Dad was able to do the 1 month deal which is nice, but he knew about his move long ago. =(
