Race rubber??

I need some input on race rubber for Hawaii Raceway Park, or what I like to call the "tire shredder".

What would you go with and why?

Have you considered Toyo RA-1s?

http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_lines/high_perf/ra1.html

Does anyone run them at autox? I've read good things about them for a long time, and its pretty common for them to be shaved. That said, didnt almost every car in SCC street car shootout run hoosiers

If you only plan to use for track I'd go with the V700s or Hoosiers if you can dish out the $$ for them. For track and street I'd just stick with S03s or maybe look into Falken Azenis Sports.

I have V700s on my spare rims now and I plan to replace the stockers with S03s when they wear down.

If you are buying a "Race Tire" get a "Race Tire."

What I mean is, if your purpose is to buy and use race tires as race tire the get a true R compound tire. If you want a tire that you can change before you leave your house, get a DOT approved race tire. If you just want another set of tires to abuse the get another set of tires to abuse.

I say R3S03's RACE TIRES as asked in your question.

I would have to agree with 18hrwrx, But as rough as the track is here I just don't see spending too much money on tires that are going to get shredded but if you are going back to the mainland soon and if you are going where I think you might then the track there is more tire friendly and they would last longer there. But thats just my $.02 Plus how much use are you really going to get out of them here I don't see getting much use out of them.

I don't know much about these tires although I hear that they are decent tires.

S-O3 pole positions
I have these on my Integra and have done numerous auto-x's and track days in wet and dry. They have better wet weather handling than Azenis but lower dry grip than them. Overall, this is a good 'hawaii' (rain or shine but no snow) tire. They hold up ok in track events although they chunk up like any other street tire on the track. They don't get greasy like Azenis on the track.

Kumho VicToRacers V700's
I just got a used set and have limited experience on them. They grip very well and warm up very quickly. There is no comparison between these and street tires so I am not sure why street tires are included in this poll. They have a better performance:value ratio than Hoosiers but do not have better ultimate grip compared to the Hoosier. They are suited for auto-x and some track. Track days aren't 'competitions' but rather 'skill buildiers' so I don't use r compounds for those at this point in time. However, it would be interesting to see how they fair. I will eventually use my set when they get all poopy.

Hoosier R3S03's
Hoosier A3S04's
The R's are for track and the A's are for auto-x so you take your pick. If money is no object, these are the tires to get. However, I would rather get the V700s to start since they are cheaper and R compounds take a lot of getting used to all together. You will gain more from simply going to R compounds than you will gain going straight to Hoosiers. By the time you figure out Rs you will need to get a new set so that is why I say go for the V700s. Better yet, if you can source a slightly used set then you can play with those for a while. If you already have experience on R compounds then what are you waiting for? Go get your Hoosiers if you got the $$$ and the V700s if you don't!

I just need a very good tire to beat up at the track and the S-03, BFG's and V700's are about the same price.

I kinda think that also.......At my skill level I had no problems with the BFG T/A KD's and RE 070's that I've run, on past track days.

Dan, I voted for Kumho V700. I agree with Mike that if you want a RACE tire, get an R compound. Hoosiers would give you the BEST traction for track days & autox, but will not last very many events. The V700's are a good compromise of "stick" and longevity. I personally have never shaved or heat cycled V700's. My $.02
