Possibly moving to Hawaii, any suggestions?
Hey all, I thought you guys might be able to help me out. I am thinking of moving to Kauai for a short period of time (no more than 2 years). Do you all have any suggestions as far as part time/full time jobs go? I would be willing to do pretty much anything as long as I could pay the bills/rent. I am a stock broker now, so anything bank/investments related would be fine too. Also, how much should I expect to pay in rent/utilities and so on on a monthly basis. Thanks in advance for your help!
IB TKC responses.
Anyway, if you want to work on kauai, I'd think you would be better off on oahu for the job you are looking for. There are many day traders here on oahu, but they wake up early! The time difference is 5-6 hours, depending on time of year, so that may affect things for you. As far as rent goes, wait until sneezerboi or any kauai-ites can come help you with rental rates.

Dude, I was born and grew up in S.F., lived in O'ahu for a while, and have been to Kaua'i a couple times.
Even for a false moke like me, Kaua'i is TOO quiet. The entire island practically shuts down at 8pm (sometimes even earlier), there's only 1 "major" shopping center, and you can still find houses that have no electricity or proper plumbing. Kaua'i is more of a vacation spot to unwind than a place I'd choose to live.
If you want the real "Hawai'ian Country" experience, I'd suggest moving to somewhere on O'ahu like the North Shore or the northern end of the Windward side of the island. All the peace and quiet you want, but with the added of bonus of being able to drive to Town to pick anything up you may need in case of emergency. O'ahu is the best of both worlds, and has everything that you could possible want or need from life in Hawai'i.
Hell, if it weren't for family obligations, I'd still be living on O'ahu!
One other thing to consider: more rural parts of the Aloha State are steeped in "local culture", even moreso than in Town or any of the more developed areas of the state. It's be wise to be well-versed and very familiar with the "local kine" lifestyle if you're really going to move to "the country".

yeah, a buddy of mine grew up on O'ahu and said the same thing. I am pretty respectful of others though, and I keep a pretty low profile. Thats good to know though. Thanks for the heads up, its good to know that kind of thing, beats getting an *** beating!
I am a nature lover (sort of, most would never think it) and always love to relax. Traffic is great on kauai, the people are nice, and there is peace and quiet. I am also under the belief that oahu is VERY crowded, but with that comes all the ammenities (food places!).

can't beat the endless restaurants on Oahu. I moved from southern california a couple years ago and have been to Maui, Kauai, & big island.. I love nature, & quiet but I'd rather leave kauai, and the other island for weekend trips. you can get really cheap inner-island flights during certain parts of the year. North Shore Oahu is the ticket if you can work from home. You can go hiking around different parts of Oahu and never see another person, though like other said.. if you want good food, shopping, bars, or just good people watching it's no more than 45 minutes away.
What ever you choose it's a great experience. I'm a full on extravert that his found peace in living in and introverted world.
Are you bringing a subie?

I dont think I am going to bring the subie. It is far from being able to be smogged, I think I'd rather sell it and once I get there, buy a beater truck or something. Hopefully I can pull this off in the next 6-9 months!

If you're on O'ahu (ie Honolulu County), you DO have to worry about the safety inspection and recon, but if you really do go to Kaua'i, they don't give a crap about anything out there (in terms of mods, etc.)
