As I log more miles on the struts, they just keep getting smoother and better. It is as if there is add'l bump/droop travel because when the car hits a low spot on the road or a pot hole, rather than a large thud and the feeling of being unsettled, the sturts just absorb the blow and smooth it out. Unreal.

Coilovers may be more fashionable and the mod du jour in the sport compact scene, but I feel that my current setup is much better than coilovers for a DD.

When I saw the struts in the box, their appearance was quite plain looking, but it's whats inside that counts.

 

For real. Can't go wrong with ohlins.

 

I'm sure you must have contemplated the KW V3's? I'm trying to decide myself. Daily drivability is important to me as well. One of the things swaying me toward coilovers is the ride height adjustability. That's why i'm so curious to see your pics .

Did you consider going with RCE springs also? Just curious as I am trying to figure out what I want to do with my ride.

 

I was riding on my JDM Pinks for close to a year on the OEM struts. That is the only reason that I did not go to the RCE springs. No sense changing springs that I like. I like the rate of the Pinks and their drop is enough for me. The RCE camber plates lower them an additional 3/8" of an inch in the front (this is in addition to the amount of lowering from the springs alone). IMO the drop is perfect. I can still charge over rough roads and I don't have to angle over the largest speed bumps.

Also, our Solo track is kinda rough so the bump travel is appreciated when I go racing.

I had coilovers on my VW and to be honest, once I had the ride height set, I never touched the height adjustability again. BTW my VW was also a Solo race car and DD.

IMO the benefit to coilover is the ability to adjust cross weight percentages on scales. If you need to do this, then coilovers are necessary. But for a DD, I don't think I'd go that far.

Again, my car also races in Solo Street Modified class and does very well against cars on full coils.

Find the setup that works for you and go with it.

 

I want these struts when my Bilsteins start to go on the Legacy.

I've got the Ohlins coilovers and in my opinion there's nothing smooth about them in any setting. They're truly a drivers mod. They handle like beasts and ride just the same.

 

The coilovers and fixed perches are two different things. My Ohlins fixed perches with JDM Pinks ride smooth on the road. By smooth, I mean that the initial bump may be firmer than the OEM struts, but once the bump is absorbed that's it. No add'l oscillation like the OEM struts.

I'll get pix this weekend. I was busy getting the Miata race car on the track for the event this past Sunday.

I should have some time this weekend to take some pix.

The struts are breaking in and getting smoother every day. I look for rough roads now because the car just absorbs the roughness.

 

Are you telling me that they are getting smoother? Man, that's awesome. Too bad you live on Maui, I'd have liked to get a ride.

So have you autox'd with them yet? Really curious to hear how they perform.

 

They were a lot stiffer when I first started driving on the car. I guess the seals and internals are starting to break in.

I haven't done a Solo on the car yet, I wanted to take it easy to let the internals seat. I'll be racing on Dec. 17 and will have a full update after that.
