push the clutch in. have the car in first gear and hold down the brake with your foot. when you let off of the brake it should grab real quick then let off. kinda like for half a second.

i think i figured it out, thanks. all I had to do was push extra hard on the brake and the car held me for like a second. Still dying out practicing on a small hill though. *sigh* gonna be a while before I learn this manual thing.
