Don't waste your money on the stuff you can get at Checker's in the small cans. A few people here, including myself (thanks Pat) use Xylene as a fuel additive. 7 gallons of 92 octane, and 1 gallon of Xylene (117 octane) will give you 95 octane. Yes it's paint thinner, so be careful putting it in your car. You'll need at least one towel to protect the paint around the gas cap area, and a funnel with a long flexible spout. If you'd like, I can get together with you sometime & show you my "kit", & how I put it in. I know it helped me a lot to have someone help me out the first time.

homedepot has it for like $9 a gallon if you dont want the xylene you can go with toulene which is alittle cheaper and is only 114 octane i think.

^^^ Same place I get it. I know Mario uses ACE Hardware's version of the stuff. The can you're looking for at home depot is blue, & says Xylol in smaller letters above the word Xylene.

in the ej25T thread i posted a question about "crackling" noises upon hard acceleration. anyways, last night i decided to "waste" my money on a bottle of octane booster before a fill up and oddly enough after 10 minutes of driving i noticed the crackling noises dissappeared. not sure if i was having detonation or some kind of wastegate flutter problem.

i just hope that this quick fix is sufficient enough for the time being. and BTW. . . i truly believe what everyone has been saying about gas. . . just wish i didn't learn the hardway

Thumbs up HOME BREW 100 OCTANE

Guys, I previously posted on this, but it was sometime ago. Here's the magic formula, 1 Gallon of Xylene + 3 Gallons of 92 Octane (Shell or 76 recommended) + 3 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil (Due to the Xylene's extremely dry properties) = 4 Gallons of 100 octane. You can pick up a 5 gallon drum of Xylene for about $36, if you have an account at a paint shop. This equates to $3.38 per gallon of 100 Octane (ROUGHLY). If you have any questions, PM me or post. I run at least a blended 95 octane all the time and the additional cost is only about $0.50 a gallon. With this I can easily run about 17.5 - 18 PSI without any knocking or detonation.

I'm not sure on how much of a percentage is safe or not. I think gpatmac told me one time to keep it around the 20% level at maximum, but that was a while back & I have a bad memory.

I used 2 gallons to 3/4 tank of 92 octane for the last 2 weeks & everything ran ok.

I've also read about putting a couple of cap fulls of ATF in, instead of the mystery oil for the same reasons. Do you have any insight on this wrx151??

Honestly, I've never tried the ATF in place of the MM Oil. However, I'm sure it will provide similar properties for lubrication. I prefer to use the MM oil, do to some articles I've read and also due to my past experience with v6 Turbo's. I've never had problems with the MMO and it's relatively cheap, if you get the larger bottle. I also used it mixed with Nitro Methane, which works not bad. With all the different formulas out there, I find the mix I posted to works the best and is the most cost effective. My gas milage is better, I can flip the switch and run high boost w/o detonation all while not spending $6+ per gallon from Union 76. If anyone has a better formula or other insite, please post.

thanks for the replies. good thing u guys told me not to get the "wal-mart, checkers" octane booster. btw u can get marvel oil from longs. i used it for rc cars. anyway, funkdrmr, are you free saturday? cuz i'm going kapolei tracks tomorrow and i really want to try out that additive you were talking about. or if anyone is going tomorrow, i'd just want to know about these additives before i have detonation. oh, and do they improve e.t. times?
