I know this is off topic and I'm not a racist tick but cant John Doe's & his legal party just leave it alone already!! Im mean sheessh, in past history they forcingly took away the native Hawaiians land/s when they have their own lands back in Europe and the America's(now the mainland) and force them to convert their religion, profit off the lands. And now they are trying to destroy the one thing the Native Hawaiian/s has that they could call it their own and disrupt the very essence that makes Kamehameha Schools Kamehameha schools. To preserve the Hawaiians.. And now I want to just end it on that note.
So what are you guys take on it??

you know walter i feel ya im not even hawaiian (blood anyway) but my children are (their mom is half)and im a third generation portuguese italian brought up in hawaii and its selfish crap like this that makes it clear to me why hawaiians would be so standoffish about foreigners moving here and trying to act like they own the damn place the rules set up by the hawaiian govt. when the school was started clearly states that the school is for people of hawaiian descent only!!!! that to many may seem racist but to me its no different than a school like la pietra or sacred hearts or st louis or damien you know all the schools that are all boy or all girl what the hell is wrong with letting the hawaiians have a school designated just for them....they need it!!! more so than that stupid john doe needs to prove that he is a STUPID, SELFISH haole!! thats for sure!! thanks walter now im all pissed
dont call me white dont call me white!!!(those that listen to nofx know what i mean!!)

I think we need to step back here....
Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate (KSB) is about one thing: money. They can go on and on about preserving tradition and the last bastion of the Hawaiian community, but that's all PR for the masses. For the record, KSB enjoys tax exempt status on the basis of carrying out the trust of Bernice Pauahi Bishop. How many times have you heard KSB supporters say "carrying out the will of Pauahi"? Probably many. How many times have you heard an official of KSB say it? Exactly zero. Because the will says nothing about Hawaiians-only, and upper management knows it.
Read the will, it's available online. It says that the trust is for the education of indigent children of Hawaii. "Indigent" meaning poor or impoverished. Are all the kids going to KSB poor or needy? "Children of Hawaii"... well what does that mean? Heck, it could mean my son, who is Japanese, but was born here so doesn't that make him a child of Hawaii? Even better, the will states that, now and forever, instructors at the school shall be of the Protestant religion. Without even checking, I know for sure that all the teachers are not Protestants. So the people that say to "follow the will" actually mean "follow the parts that we like, interpreted the way we like".
Now one could make the case that the ends justify the means, that we should let KSB go because they are doing something for the Hawaiian community. But that is a slippery slope, and can justify a lot.
Also, step back and ask yourself: what if a mainland school came here, paid so well that they got the best teachers in Hawaii to work for them. The only catch is that only Haole kids could attend. How long would that last? How many of you would protest a school like that?
I'm not strictly agains KSB or the Hawaiian community. I was born here, as were my parents and grandparents. I just want things to be fair. If KSB wants to admit only Hawaiians, and wants to hand pick those students, I have no problem with that as long as they don't hide behind the smoke screen (and tax-exempt status) of the will of Pauahi.
OK, now I got myself all worked up and probably pissed off some of you, so I will stop.

Thanks for the link. I went back and re-read the will, as I was posting from memory earlier. I did get the "children of Hawaii" part wrong, the will does expressly state that the children helped shall have Hawaiian blood.
Here is the relevant passage: "...and to devote a portion of each years income to the support and education of orphans, and others in indigent circumstances, giving the preference to Hawaiians of pure or part aboriginal blood..."
Notice the word "preference" which, to my knowledge does not mean "only".
*EDIT* I wrote a lot more stuff, but I'm drunk posting so I will quit while I'm only slightly behind. Sorry if I pissed anyone off, I'm trying to stay with the facts but I'm still letting personal bias come through. I will not post any more to this thread, and would be happy to see it locked up.

I'm fine with Kamehameha Schools / Bishop Estates running how they want to run...doesn't hurt me any.
Plus, when I went to college I got a crapload of grants and scholarships for being Chinese/Poli Sci/Athlete/etc. and I view it as no different.
I won't say I know much else about all of this stuff but I am ok with them running their show like how they've been doing it, seeing as the Hawaiian people were taken over by the U.S. and still don't enjoy the benefits like other people who were taken over (Native Americans who get to have awesome Casinos). Anyways, who really cares? Not like there aren't other Private Schools to go to...I went to Mid Pac on scholarship and was just fine.
