Nolimit, 18hrwrx,

and anyone else, would you port and polish your turbo for $195? I'm still waiting for a map from Cobb, so time isn't an issue. Your thoughts?

I think I would just get a bigger one. That is if you're looking for more significant power.

How much of a gain could you actually get with porting and polishing your turbo?

Aren't you still limited from the exhaust housing?

If you want my opinion, I'd say that it should definitely help. Why does everyone replace their IC hoses? The Samco's are smooth on the inside.

Same with porting & polishing heads, too, right?

Lastly, not so much an opinion but an observation. Those TD04s that are starting to flood ebay, from PE, Ion, and now Deadbolt, are all just ported. When Mitch got his, I think he was expecting as much power from it as from a vf.

I've heard Good things about porting/polishing the VF34.

I'm not sure on the price though, ... you'd have to pay for shipping and all that too, right?

As far as a doing it to a stock turbo? naah

Polishing ports/air flow channels are like a swimmer shaving his legs. There's no argument about it helping, but the amount of increased performance is sometimes not worth the effort/cost.

Changing a port's/channel's size and shape is much more effective in increasing airflow, however it usually takes a very experienced hand and a flowbench to determine increases in flow.

I have ported and polished heads before. I have also thrown heads on a Superflow bench before and flowed them. It is NOT easy to increase flow with a dremel and a couple of hours of time.

With that being said - a quality (read $$) port/polish job on a set of heads can make a stunning difference in the airflow characteristics of a vessel.

Is porting/polishing a turbo worth $200 + shipping and handling when the turbo itself cost $850? Not sure about that one...

Note: A thread on NASIOC shows decreased boost onset rpm vs. an unported turbo.

I don't think there's a question regarding decreased spool onset.

If money is no object, and you want the fastest spoolin' VF34 out there then this may be worth it.

I'd say you'd want to exhaust wrap your header and uppipe as well if this is your goal.

How will your engine management contend with the modified characteristics of the turbo?

Are you going to be running programmable EM?

If you change the rpm that you see peak torque, by right you should change your fueling and timing curves to reflect this as well...

Yup,

header/uppipe and most of the downpipe wrapped. I'm waiting for the Cobb reflash like Nolimit said, but I'm getting very impatient. Money is an object, but I only want to put it in once.

The guys at Cobb might be a good place to start asking re: the effectiveness of a ported turbo and/or if their programming needs to be modified?

I would be very surprised if they said they wouldn't have to do some type of curve manipulation.

I know that I have had to add and remove some timing at different areas in my UTEC when I replaced the VF30 with the 34 or I knocked.

haven't been to that site. But they're using a VF30 in their kit, so the map should be close. A little more dollars, but seriously, Cobb said the AccessEcu would be out at the end of the summer. I also like the idea that I can download the data and see what's going on. I am reading that right, right?
