<-- new guy w/ some Q's
I don't know much about the handling side, but as for power, the first mod I did was to replace the stock up-pipe with an aftermarket catless one. Your 05 still has a pre-cat in the up-pipe which I had heard has the possibility of breaking up and damaging your turbo. The potential for this problem is increased if you do any mods downstream of the turbo without swapping out the up-pipe first.
That mod was the biggest pain in the butt so far, but it was relatively cheap, gave me peace of mind and helped the turbo spool up a little quicker.

R&d
- they didn't charge me "diagnostics" to pop my hood and look at something for 5-10mins if I dropped by
- never sprung surprise charges, or told me on pick-up they had to keep it longer/had to do more (they ALWAYS called me)
- NEVER the fake-friendly service... they've been the same to me for 19mos.!
- I'll miss R&D when I PCS next year

You are very lucky that you haven't modded your engine yet. Before you spend any money, seriously consider going with a rotated mount turbo kit and cat back exhaust.
What good is power when you don't have control. 1) suspension (springs, shocks, swaybars, endlinks) 2) Brakes (rotors, pads, SS brakelines, Cusco master cylinder brace) 3) CG Lock to hold you in due to suspension mods. 4) Engine mods.
I'm all for saving money, and I'm also pro-open source.
But to be honest, flashing random maps to your ECU is not a good thing if you're unable to understand what everything means. Open source merely unlocks the potential for a **** up, to be honest.
I'm sure you're probably knowledgeable since you're an advocate, but there may be others out there who think it's AS simple as understanding ECUFLASH and doing a successful flash.
The 4g6 and its derivatives are fairly stout and EVO and DSM owners have a large window to **** up, (if you pull the head off a 4g6, you'll see right away when you look at their quench pads) so they're pro open source for a reason. Take their open source rationale and apply it to any of the EJ motors and you will kill the headgasket pretty goddamn quick. The 4g6s is so knock tolerant that you could tune it with AFC and dip into the 11s with no reflash. But that style is not so good for Subaru. There's no crossover.
Just food for thought.

^Well said.
Miss those times dearly, and very true. The day I hooked up a data-logger & UEGO AEM, and saw my fuel trims and knock counts I couldn't believe my engine hadn't blown.
