I'm slightly confused, are you absolutely sure that I can have a exhaust system and remove all cats and be ok in Hawaii?

If you are going the official route and trying for a recon sticker you'll need cats.

If no then no need.

If you have a problem when you get here, we can put my girlfriends cat in your exhaust for a while. I think it will fit in a 3" exhaust without cutting it into pieces.

MEEOOOOWWWW!!!

Welcome! If you need recon, you need a cat. If you want a safety check and don't need recon, you may be able to get away with being catless.

Welcome to HIIC OP. Enjoy your stay in Hawaii as long as it may be. Some of the best Suby guys I know are on here are willing to help anyone out.

As far safety and recon is concerned:

Safety and Recon This

I lived in Hawaii for 10 years and not once did I ever give a dollar to the state of Hawaii for recon. Never once did I see the roads improve as far as permanently fixing pot holes. When a pot hole was patched it became a speed bump in the middle of the freeway. But then again I suppose this is a form of job security for the local residence. Personally I believe the money spent on recon and safety go to local officials so they can live the lavish life in Hawaii Kai and get an extra scoop of mac salad with their mix plate.

You're lucky that you didn't have to go through recon. As for me I will be in HI for good. I grew up in Kaneohe but came up to NE to wrestle and have been stuck here for 4 years longer as my gf gets done with pharmacy school. When I ship this car to HI it will have the NE license plates on so will HI make me go through an out of state inspection?

Hi... and welcome... even though I don't think i have room to say that considering I'm still kind of new myself!

Anyway, I just shipped my WRX from CA and I didn't have to go through an out of state inspection. The only thing I had to do was the safety inspection. But the thing is, you WILL fail the safety inspection no matter what, because you don't have Hawaii plates. But when you take the inspection slip to a satellite city hall, as long as you passed everything else, they're fine with it and they'll give you the HI plates and then you have to go back to the safety inspection place to get the stickers. and then you're done. It is pretty tedious to drive back and forth, but I think this is the best way to do it... (?)

QFT. That's the way it's done for an out-of-state vehicle!

I think I'm just going to get a catback to avoid any future problems with inspections. If I don't like it I can always go catless. What setup/brand would you recommend for a downpipe and catback exhaust?

^^^ the one that everyone has. the one that puts out the most power

but seriously all DP's and CBE will have small differences and vary in HP plus or minus 1 or 2 hp. as far as DP's first question to ask is do you want bellmouth or divorce waste gate type. do some searches lots of info here and on the web.

Also check out the classifieds here. I have a Perrin down pipe for sale that has a divorce waste gate.
