My check engine light came on as i was driving home from the meet last week (stupid security guard). this is the second time its come on and i cant figure out why. I changed all the fluids. put two different brand new sets of NGK irridiums in, which I gap checked myself and are friggen expensive. it doesnt seem like there is really anything aparently wrong and both times its come on have been during low rpm highway cruising. the only thing that i can tell is off is that it seems like under high throttle the car hesitates ever so slightly as if maybe its missfiring or something. its not very noticable and unless you drive the car every day you wouldnt notice it. it also seems to idle a bit high when you first start it up cold and it didnt used to do that, it hovers at about 1500 for a min or so. maybe its normal and i just dont remember. anyway if you guys have any ideas let me know. also whats the number for the service dept at servco? thanks.

 

hey mike...this could be anything, but i suggest you find someone with obd scanner so you can find out what the cel code is...i had a problem before with an engine misfire (p0304)...i got my AP2 map in and it went away (expensive fix!:armee_smilies092...it could be bad gas that you put in, your o2 sensors, dirty maf sensor, or you just need a tune...etc...

 

yea i think i'm at the point in my mods where i need to get it tuned and get a boost controller, my budget just doesnt always agree with my dreams. brian pmed me and said he has a meter and he is goin to the meet so ill try and check it out then. i tried out an octane booster and at the end of the tank is when it came on so i wonder if it maybe found a fault in the fuel system or did something to one of the sensors or something (although it said it was safe for all that stuff). hopefully the obd will shed some light. it could be one of the coil packs or something too cause it feels like it may be misfiring slightly and i know the plugs are good. i dont know, but when my baby is sick it makes me sad

 

if it's missing and you changed the plugs did you try changing the wires? could be a faulty plug wire or even the coil pack going. could be a duck in the intake. get the code read and see...if it's a duck though i got dibs!

 

irridiums are actually good if your riding your car hard (i.e. occasional track, autocross), but if it's just a DD, then the oem NGK Plats or even the copper burns better. i haven't tried the copper yet, but is highly recommended both in cobb forums and in nasioc (and my mechanic that i trust). i almost went with irridiums... i bought the set but did not install it after reading and researching more about it. it could also be your coil packs...i hope you won't be switching them around. but get the obd scan and go from there...good luck!

 

That idle thing is normal my car does that every morning when i start my car cold

 

I think checkers does the obd check for free......if it's free I'll take 3...haha
Or if not them I know for sure Vakamon has one.

yea i went to checkers, their software is outdated and doesnt work on cars past 2001 or 2002, when you hook it up it wont interface right.

 

yea ted, i got the irridiums cause i tend to spend alot of time around the red, it makes me wonder though cause the light comes on when i am just cruisin at low rpm... it needs to be friday lol.

 

Ask someone with an Accessport to bring it...they can pull the CEL for you while you attend the meet....it will take a whole 30 seconds...
