Might do a Quaife front diff - where should I get it installed?

I've been thinking quite a while now about doing a Quaife front differential to help me get around the cones quicker. The damn STis are getting too close to me. One sticking point right now is that I don't know where to go to get the thing installed. Are either of the dealer service departments good with aftermarket installs? My car is waaaaay past warranty, so that's not an issue, but some dealer shops won't touch aftermarket parts just because they're aftermarket parts, ya know?

Any options other than the dealers? Have any of you guys torn into a tranny/front diff? Is it something I could manage on my own (and/or with some assistance from those who've seen the inside of a Subie 5-spd before)? I'm moderately capable with a wrench, I'm just slow as molasses.

Thanks,
Pat Olsen

Woah! $1200 for install? Thats wicked.

You can do it yourself, given that you have all the parts. Tricky parts is shimming and getting the bearing pre-load right, but it isn't rocket science. You can look it up in the shop manual. I did my CUSCO front ones myself with supervision. Pretty easy and it was on 6MT which is tougher.

Yeah, $1200 is certainly more than I would have expected.

I have access to the Hobby Shop, so tools shouldn't be a problem. I would be worried about pre-load and all that kinda stuff. My Haynes Manual has jack **** about tearing into the transmission (not too surprising, I guess), so I'd have to get a copy of the actual Service Manual somewhere if I was going to try this myself. And knowing my slooooow workings, it would probably take me forever.

Hypers is just going to direct u to Pearl City Trans(I asked). I also asked Speedgear too. They told me that they didnt recommed ANYONE to do transmission work and that they didnt do it themselves. Didnt even ask on what type of car. No way in hell im trying to take apart a transmission to install a LSD when the transmission didnt come stock with one in the first place. Might be easier w/ one that does. I would have no idea. 1200 may be a little pricey but how much is it going to cost you if u get something wrong when u do it yourself?? I would mess w/ the transmission in my 74 Chevy pickup but not a 2000 Toyota Celica. Not even in the same ballpark.

Ed at

Schuman Waipahu has been to tranny school. Not sure if that includes the differentials, but I'd bet it does. Can't think of anyone I'd trust more than him. Give Braun (service manager) a call. Tell him San sent you (not sure if that helps or not).
