i can see how the residents are complaining. the three times i did stairway to heaven last oct and nov there were about 30-35 people in the stairs.

the best way to avoid a ticket is to now start at the stairs heaving over to moanalua valley.

you can go thru moanalua valley via tripler or middle ridge, or bowman. all of these are WTF hikes though.... just don't go all the way down if you want to go to the stairs. the only thing is, you have to come back up, and go back to where you came from. i don't think the guards are willing to go after you going up 4,000 steps..but, that will be an all day hike right there.
