I will later. I was just on a quest to see for myself, so I have and I am digesting the situation.

Maybe I'll take more tomorrow.

Hope I can get this bad boy back together. Maybe I should buy that $100 gear train that guy was selling.

That might be a good idea.

I probably won't get around to it until Friday or so (they're closed on Sat/Sun, right?)

I'm stating this publicly in order to hold myself to it...I will install a gearset in that tranny case. I won't pay anyone to do it.

That's my pennance for taking the 6spd to the dealership to do it.

This is also my pennance:

Attn: anyone from the dealership,

Schuman Subaru cut me an awesome deal and did a very good job in installing my trans. Not only that, they were more helpful than I deserved in loaning me Rexstang's old tranny, especially after I told them I broke it.

I'm saying that as a thanks for what they did for me. I have learned a lot by this entire experience. (Just not too much so that someone could accuse me of being a mature, sensible grownup, though.)

Can I help? I'd like to learn and install a gearset in my car, but my friend told me that there are a lot of special Subaru tranny tools that need to be used.

Sure, but I don't want to mislead you, though. I don't have the money now, and being that I've got a functional trans, it's lower on the priority list (after tires and exhaust). I'm going to treat it like an ongoing project...researching, phone calls, cost analysis.

As far as the tools issue goes, I think that I saw the main thing Ed used on VRod's gearset. It looks like a drill press. I think my main concern is the billions of little parts that I saw last night which were on the main shaft. When the day comes when I've got some gears, I would hope that I could have someone who knows what they're doing looking over my shoulder while I do it. That way, I've got a mentor who would ensure that I don't screw up while I'm still doing all of the work myself.

I guess lastly, I don't want to keep making myself all of these promises so that I have 40 projects up in the air.

I'm thinking that my first option is like Gdogg said, buy a new, stock 1st gear and reinstall it (of course you saw that other cog that's completely stripped, it would need to be replaced too. I don't even know, in that picture, which gears are which and which shaft comes from the Engine and which goes to the diff's)

On the other hand, do you remember that one video I posted up of the Danish Racing League where that BMW? was just trashing everything else on the course, and how his gears were just this high pitched, almost painful whine? Was that just normal straight cut gears? I think that would be a cool novelty to have in your car (at least for about a day or so.)

ps: could someone let me know if I've crossed over the line of normal chat vs. technical discussion too much? That is not the intent. I'm mainly just typing out loud.
