I need a big favor
First, if you had to store your cherished car for a year, besides putting it on blocks and draining the fuel tank, what are some other things I should do?
second, I need a place to put it. I can have the gov't store it for free, but would you do that?
My understanding is that the gov't is looking for contractors, but chances are they wouldn't drain it and store it properly.
I'm willing to pay someone to help me out. I've got a locking car cover, but I'd prefer to have it on concrete and out of the elements.

I heard something about I think putting thicker oil in it not sure if that's correct. If I were you I would definitely have it stored somewhere where it will be inside. There might be something you could put in the tank to keep it from building up moisture unless you store it in a climate controlled storage. I'd be willing to give ya a hand if you need one if you store it..

Disconnect the battery and put it on a trickle charger. See if you can get any dessicant bags to put in the interior if it's going to be stored in a dark/damp/warehouse type place. Find fuel stabilizer because the gas in the tank/lines/etc. will go stale and develop varnish/gum in the system (that's BAD!).

Like this?
How can I remove water in the fuel tank?
If you only have a small quantity of water, then the addition of 500mls of
dry isopropanol (IPA) to a near-full 30-40 litre tank will absorb the water,
and will not significantly affect combustion. Once you have mopped up the
water with IPA, small, regular doses of any anhydrous alcohol will help
keep the tank dry. This technique will not work if you have very large
amounts of water, and the addition of greater amounts of IPA may result in
poor driveability.
Water in fuel tanks can be minimised by keeping the fuel tank near full, and
filling in the morning from a service station that allows storage tanks to
stand for several hours after refilling before using the fuel. Note that
oxygenated gasolines have greater water solubility, and should cope with
small quantities of water.

Pat,
When I was swapping my trunks with Ty last weekend, he told me how he came to getting his car. He had stored his Integra (all tricked out, turboed, etc...) using gov't storage over on Ford Island. I guess while he was gone, 12 or more cars were STRIPPED down hard. It was bad enough that the insurance company totalled the car. He said they have "suspects" in the contractors, but nothing has been done at this time. Thought it might be something to think about for ya. If you wanna talk to him at the track, he has the silver STi sportin' my '02 OEM spoiler. Isn't there some decently priced private storage around?

Not just a water remover, but make sure the product you choose will stabilize the gas and reduce the amount of gum/varnish that is produced from stagnating.

Thanks Richard and Jason.
I only plan on using gov't storage for my Explorer if I can't sell it.
I'll have to take a look around for some good gas stabilizer.

cover up the exhaust and intake with something...i've seen people just get some cheap plastic sheets, a little on the thicker side, and use a small amount of silicone sealant to hold it in place...this is to keep the mice/rats/critters out of your car...also try to cover up any vents where animals could nest/breed...a guy on the bmw lists once found a nest of baby mice in his air vents when he stored his car over the winter...
i would also dress the rubber trim/surrounds on the car with BMW's gummipfledge...it's a GREAT item that protects/rejuvenates rubber...and not too expensive...i bought a tube of it for ~10 bucks a few years ago, and i still have it...
also dont forget to give it a good coat of wax before you go...
