Huh?

I've not heard of a SINGLE person paying that much ($38k) for a straight VIII out here. I know they are out here, but I've not met them amongst the many Evo owners I know. I got my '03 for $32K (about $500 under sticker) otd with very little negotiation. The Subaru dealer (5-star) could not get the STI down that low for me, but perhaps another one could have. Every single car I've bought on this island (several Hondas, DSMs, Camaro SS, etc) ALL had multi-thousand dollar additional markups posted on the window, and I've never paid it once. It goes away as soon as you sit down for negotiations every time, and the Evo was no exception. I do think the dealer markup on the windows scares away potential buyers, but I'm used to seeing it, and know I never have to pay it. I’m convinced that the only people that are thinking the dealer wont sell them for list, are the people that looked at the window sticker and did not even go inside and try to sit down and negotiate. I will always remember the goodness of the Subaru dealers I visited and saw they had no additional markup sticker on the STIs. I almost bought one based upon how cool the dealers were about selling them with no negotiation hassles.

The IV will be on the island this year, and it's already in the showrooms on the mainland. I do know the local dealer is telling people it won't be here until next year so they can get rid of the remaining VIIIs, but that is a typical lie many dealers tell when a new model is imminent.

Congratulations on your purchase decision. Like others have said, you can’t go wrong with either.

Roberto,

thats just what I heard.. I knew I wanted either an STi or an Evo.. I went with the STi and have no regrets.. the sales people out at Kaimuki(Chris and Trudy) were straight up with me and told me what I had to pay to drive it off the lot.. I appreciate that kind of stuff when it comes to business. no one wants to play the game where the dude goes in the back and writes a number and then comes out.. you know?

If you got your 03 for that OTD then good stuff man.. was it a new 03'???

flyguy3663, I totally agree with you on this stuff. The Subaru dealers out here are unusually good to deal with (yep, even 5-Star) on sales, and Mitsubishi, well, they're just like the other dealers like Honda, Chevy, etc. They all play that write a number down and meet with the sales manager crap, and I'll have no part of it. I told the sales person that when I walked in. Yes, it was a new '03. C'mon man, I'm not paying new-sticker for a used car. hahaha

Gdogg, I'm shocked Subaru did not rank higher on those charts. I understand Mitsubishi since the Evo is the only thing on their lot worth a damn, but Subaru has a great lineup that should sell very well out here. Besides the WRX/STI, they've got the Legacy GT, and the Forrester XT, all of which I consider to be best of breed in their price-range.

the problem with subies is that there is no budget car... just a least expensive one. with prices starting at around $20,000, AWD, and decent gas mileage(nothing spectacular)... with competitors starting at 15,000 for same equipment... u can see why subaru is not about volume- AWD is definitely a lil harder to sell than a basic FWD-

I had PM'd a member of evolutionm.net 'burningmoney97' about a year ago(lives in hawaii) and he told me that he paid $38K otd for a straight Evo8. He said he really wanted the car though. He has since moved on to a '05 MR. Said he bought it from the mainland and shipped it to Hawaii. It was my impression from the Hawaii peeps on evolutionm.net that Mitsu hawaii was trying to rape everybody. I also remember another member from that forum that bought his car from the mainland and shipped it here because it was cheaper that way. Mach5WRX said
"A little bit under MSRP

But that was the 3rd time I've been in there over 2 years to try and get one.

F-ing Mitsu Hawaii"

I think he may have finally got it for that low because they are trying to get rid of the VIII's to make room for the IX's. That's great that you got the Evo for that price, but from what I've been hearing from others, that is not the norm.

You get the kind of deal you'll settle with. With a screen name like "Burningmoney", it sounds as though he may be a little less price-conscious. The sales people can smell someone who wants the car so bad they will bend-over and take it. The day all Hawaii dealers refuse to sell a particular new car to me for what I consider a fair price, is the day I go through the hassle of buying a car from the mainland. It just has not come to that for me on any car yet.

Hey, I know a guy that paid over $23K for a '00 Civic Si, but I also realize he got ripped off in a way I would not have allowed to happen to me. It happens all the time at all sorts of dealerships in Hawaii, and Mitsubishi does not have a monopoly on shady sales practices. I’d say that for every 5 people that get a fair price, they find a rabid fanboi ready to take it up the pooper for $40k. That’s why I was just shocked to find the Subaru dealers not additionally marking up the STIs at all. That is every unusual for Hawaii dealerships with in-demand cars.
